I agree with this (although I changed it a wee bit), I think Messi is the better player but Ronaldo is in better form this season if you know what I mean. Rooney is undoubtedly in good form and if you listen to Sky Sports religiously you could be forgiven for thinking he is the best in the world. In a World Cup year the English are doing everything they can to big up their chances and since Wayne is in good form he obviously must be the 'best in the world'.

Enough has been said about Xavi and Iniesta, they are better than Rooney without discussion in my opinion.

On the subject of David Villa, what people forget is that he is one of only three strikers (along with Thierry Henry and Totti) from the top 3 leagues to top the European assist tables in the last 10 years. Wayne "creates goals for other players" Rooney hasn't done this, and won't this year. David Villa in my opinion is still underrated due to not playing at a team challenging in the CL later stages. In my opinion he is the best striker in the world.

Torres and Drogba have both missed parts of this season due to injury/ACON duties etc but in my opinion given the same amount of EPL games would outscore Rooney.

Another thing to remember in the race for the European Golden Shoe is that while Rooney is currently top, the English league has played more games than La Liga and as such finishes before La Liga does, meaning that Messi and Villa have 4 or 5 games more to play (Messi is currently 4 goals behind Rooney, Villa is 6), the English party could also still be spoiled by Luis Suraez of Ajax, although playing in a weaker league he needs to score 3 goals for every 2 the others mentioned score (he has more league goals than Rooney but lies second due to the Erdivisie's lower pedigree) or Antonio Di Natalie who like Messi is 4 goals behind. A mention too for Drogba who missed games due to the ACON, yet is still only 4 goals behind Rooney.

Rooney in my opinion is not quite at top table yet, I would talk about him along side strikers like Gonzalo Higuain, Diego Milito and Samuel Eto'o.

Xavi and Iniesta are midfielders. Rooney is a striker.

    Apples and Oranges.

Place form aside, Ronaldo is the best player on the planet and probably will be for some time to come. Rooney is having a purple patch this season having taken on the mantle of United's most important player and his heading has improved to the point it is a potent weapon but Ronaldo was doing that and more years ago.

Messi added goals last season which won him the best player in the world but Ronaldo has shown he is a consistent goalscorer and creator for years now.

You can add Iniesta into the mix as well, he is frighteningly talented. Even moreso than Messi according to his Barca team mates and if he added goals to his game he would be the complete footballer.

I think Maradonna being manager of Argentina has had a huge impact on the way Messi plays for his national team.

torres has been dung this season even when he has played , and this is rooneys 1st season as an out an out striker and hes doin well , the one thing rooneys got over everybody is he can defend the others cant altough messi does close down players but you dont see him ruuning halfway down to pitch to get the ball of the opposition rooneys does it often, footballs not all about step overs and flicks

But Rooney isn't a defender, and he's hardly the only striker in the world who ever tracks back. Torres has been quiet this season but he's been injured almost all of it but still has scored 11 goals (I think). Rooney's goal record this season is good but it's a myth that this is his first season playing as a striker. He was signed as a striker and has played there other than in a few albeit important games last season and maybe the one before. This is used as an excuse for him not scoring more goals in previous seasons in my opinion. He has scored a lot of goals, no one can argue with that but he has played more games than any of europes other top strikers for various reasons (and scored less goals per game than messi and ronaldo if my maths is correct)

name1 striker who defends as well and as often as rooney and still manages to score barrel loads of goal. 1 question if rooney manages to surpass ronaldos 42 goal mark this season what will you say

and when ronaldo was at united he played most of his games at the front of a triangle formation with rooney and tevez/ giggs/nani at each side the whole united team was set up to aid ronaldo just like rooney this year with valencia and giggs/nani /park on either side.Overall ronaldo for me is the best player but this year in my opinion rooneys been better slightly , plus carlo ancelloti says rooneys been the best .

I'm not arguing that he tracks back arguably more than any other striker in Europe but my point is he is a striker, it isn't his job to defend. As long as he closes down in his area of the pitch when he doesn't have he ball he is doing his job.

All of the other strikers I have mentioned throughout the thread work off the ball and on it but the fact that Rooney runs 70 yards out of position once or twice a game doesn't make him a better striker. More determined maybe but not a better player.

If he surpasses 42 goals it's a great achievement no one has said it isn't, but it won't make me call him the best striker in the world, and certainly not the best player.

Ronaldo, messi, xavi and iniesta have all shone in Champions League finals, Rooney has disappeared in two.

sorry but rooney played well against chelsea in 08 just cause he didnt score doesn't mean he disappeared plus he was out wide for both finals playing back up to ronaldo

Look wer going to have to agree to disagree here. I think Rooney is a very good player but to call him the worlds best after one top level season is absurd considering others have been performing consistently at that level for longer.

in my opinion anything Rooney can do ronaldo is better at with the exception of tracking back which wev already covered.

I feel that wer going round in circles here but one final question, are you a United fan?
