    @ Thailand Celtic:

As has been pointed out, this campaign has nothing to do with the IRA or even with liking ROH; it is to do with Celtic fans being criminalised for singing a song that is not illegal anywhere else but at the football. When some people here are actually suggesting that "Let the people sing" would have been a better alternative, though nobody is having their lives ruined for singing that song (yet), it is clear that some Celtic fans have misunderstood the real issue here and I really wish you'd help clear this up- at least until after midnight. I know you are aware of the issues, but when you post things like...

    and

...on a thread that really has little to do with that, I feel you confuse the issues and with some people apparently still not understanding what the issue actually is, it would really help the campaign if you either had this debate in H&P or at least waited until after midnight, please.

Surely this issue is far more important than any ramifications this campaign may or may not have for our club's reputation.

Also, supporting the campaign is not synonymous with supporting the IRA! For the record I am profoundly ambivalent about the various organisations denoted by that name. I can't explain why without taking this thread even further off topic than it already is. You know what, though? ROH is a very good song about astonishing acts of courage. Resistance to oppression is terribly important IMO and, regardless of whether I condone or not some of the methods used by the organisation, I personally find it incredibly moving that these young men literally starved themselves to death for a principle. I don't think I would have that courage. What must it have been like, I can't even imagine. So yes, I love that song yet I am absolutely not an IRA fan boy. As I say, this is a mere side issue as even those who hate the song can still get behind this campaign.

Finally, you and others raise the issue of whether it should be sung at Celtic matches. The road of banning things because some people find it offensive is a very, very dangerous road. I personally find some of the things our current government come out with incredibly offensive; but what am I going to do- call the police? Songs, particularly those sung together as a community form a chain of memory that is incredibly important. It always was important historically and is becoming more and more so as we are fed ever more carefully limited and biased versions of our shared history by official sources such as the media. The point is not the percentage of young Celtic fans that hear songs like ROH and decide to educate themselves (be it ever so small); the point is that in each generation there will be some and the music will be the thread that links the memory down through the generations and that provides an emotional connection.

On the subject of emotional connections...:54: @ everyone: take the line "England you're a monster" that so many people seem to dislike. I don't think England is a monster (I live in England); but when you read about what happened, and feel a small taste of the rage that those close to these events must have felt, you realise no other line would be appropriate in the song. "England, a small percentage of your population, and a few of your political and military institutions are monsters even though the majority of your population are good people and much of your culture is admirable" , though factually more accurate, would be incredibly wrong in this song on an emotional level. People need to stop analysing songs as if they were speeches.

It's no longer in the top 40 according to the BBC Radio 1 chart listings.

Good to see the wolfe tones promoting it, hopefully will encourage some of those who haven't yet bought to go for it. Such a tiny amount of money.
