It is understood that a clip of the instrumental intro and the first two lines will be played on Sunday if the song remains in the Top 40.

A BBC source told the Belfast Telegraph: "We believe it would be wrong to ban the song outright as free speech is an important principle and a ban would only give it more publicity."

Not to mention there is not one single rule in 'Rules for Chart Eligibility' that would warrant it being banned

Speaking hypothetically here, if it was in fact the case that the atmosphere would pick up again straight away were a green light given to rebel songs then I share your view. To me that would be sad. As you say, it would point to a greater desire to sing about the IRA than to sing about Celtic. Which I would find embarrassing to be perfectly honest.

    That's pure speculation however.

I prefer to believe that the reason the atmosphere at matches has dropped to stone dead levels is because of the way fans are being harassed and filmed at matches these days. It's absolutely disgraceful and if people are staying away from matches for that reason then I don't blame them at all. Football is supposed to be something you go to and enjoy in your spare time, not something you go to so you can be filmed by the police and made to feel like a common criminal. If someone had told me even 5 years ago that we would see Celtic fans being treated the way they are currently being treated at Celtic Park I would not have believed them.

Singing about the sacrifice the Hunger Strikers made is different than singing about the IRA.

Nothing wrong with any of them, but it's still different.

But allowing Roll Of Honour to be sung would singal a relaxation of the harassment of fans.Encourage some of those who are staying away to return and hopefully produce a bit more of a feelgood factor around the stadium. It is not about the IRA.

Hmmm........I'm not sure the two issues are one and the same. I don't think it's harassing fans to tell them there are one or two songs they cannot sing. Harassing fans, to me at least, is the sort of physical harassment we have seen fans at Celtic Park endure recently and that the Green Brigade have been on the receiving end of for quite some time.

I would like to think that if the filming of individuals and the surrounding by stewards of anyone who tries to get a song going was to stop then the atmosphere at matches would gradually return. For me that's a bigger issue than not being allowed to sing the Roll of Honour.

The harassment started with physical intimidation and arrests of folk singing Rebel songs and has now progressed to the level that they are so desparate to avoid any sign of dissent they are now comfortable targeting anyone who sings owt.
