Former Celtic managing director, Fergus McCann, and former Celtic captain, Scott Brown, have both paid tribute to Bertie Auld following his sad passing at the age of 83.

The Lisbon Lion established himself as a Hoops legend with the incredible success he and his team-mates achieved under Jock Stein, and his wonderful personality ensured he was loved by everyone who knew him and met him over the years.

Fergus McCann said: “I was saddened to hear of the death of Bertie Auld, a great player and a fine person. For me and my generation, in the 1960s, he was a Celtic star.

“Then, much later, in my time at the Club, I saw that his personality, especially his great sense of humour was a benefit to all who knew or dealt with him. He will be greatly missed.”

And Scott Brown who, in 620 appearances for the club over 14 years, himself brought so much success to Paradise, said: “I am devastated to hear of the passing of the legend, Lion and dear friend, Bertie Auld.

“He was the happiest man in the world and always had time to share his amazing stories with supporters, players and staff. Bertie lit up a room when he walked in and filled it with lots of laughter (and singing!).

“He truly was Mr. Celtic. My thoughts and prayers go out to Bertie’s family and friends.

It was the evening of March 1st, 1967, the venue a football stadium in a place called Novi Sad in Yugoslavia, the occasion a quarter-final tie in the European Cup. Celtic were about to run out into a stadium lit by brilliant floodlights to face a team called Vojvodina.

To say I was nervous is something of an understatement. I had already played two European matches – home ties against Go-Ahead Deventer and Aarhus – but we were ahead in those games at the time and I found them straightforward.

This match was not only against a team I had never heard of before but one which came from a country well regarded for the quality of its football. So, you can understand my nervousness.

Just before the match, Bertie Auld suddenly appeared beside me as I was washing my hands in the bathroom and launched into a tirade, pointing out that I had no reason to be nervous, as I was holding my place in one of the best teams in Europe, all the boys in the side were right behind me and I had just to play my normal game. At the time, it was just the boost I needed and I was always grateful for his input.

It was typical of Bertie, whose presence in the dressing-room was always good for the team. As a player, he was very sharp over the first few yards and a fine passer of the ball, scoring more than a few important goals at vital times. Another strength was his confidence.

With Bertie in the dressing-room, it was likely to be noisy and full of laughter, a very essential ambience for success. I, for one, always found his presence very re-assuring. For a number of years, Bertie was an essential part of one of the best teams in Europe yet was always easy to deal with and ready to help.

During his career at Celtic Park, and also after his retirement, there can be few other players who have kept up such a great rapport with the Celtic support, attending functions all over not only his native Scotland but also South of the Border and North America.

The fact that Bertie had been ill was fairly well-known but his passing would still have caused some surprise.

At this difficult time, my thoughts are with Bertie’s wife Liz, his children Susan and Robert, plus his extended family. Their husband, father and grandfather was a real nice guy. May he rest in peace.

Ange Postecoglou has paid tribute to Bertie Auld, describing him as a true legend of Celtic.

The Celtic manager was speaking following the death of the Lisbon Lion, who has passed away at the age of 83.

He said: “With Bertie's passing a family and a Club has lost a true legend and a great man.

“All our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go sincerely to Bertie's family for their tremendous loss of someone so dear to them.

“I know Bertie was one of the true Celtic greats, leaving his mark indelibly on the Club and our supporters by reaching the very summit of footballing achievement, but also through his unique personality.

“Big, special football clubs are built on major figures like Bertie and we should all forever be grateful to him for all he achieved and all he was. I know his spirit will flow through Celtic forever.”

And the manager’s words were echoed by Celtic captain, Callum McGregor. He said: “On behalf of all the players at the Club, I send our thoughts and prayers to Bertie's family. I know they will miss him terribly.

“I will always feel really lucky to have known Bertie. Coming through the ranks at Celtic, it is people like Bertie you look up to and not only for his achievements on the pitch but just for the way he was.

“It was so humbling to be in his company, to know what he had achieved for Celtic, but also just to spend time with a brilliant man and a proper legend.

“He just always had huge drive, passion and energy and a tremendous love for the Club.

“He loved the fun that football could bring to people and he had that infectious warmth and spirit which gave so much to anyone that met him.

“We will remember Bertie with such love and affection, we are privileged to have known him and today we are all thinking of Bertie's family.”
