Infernal Affairs (The real and original Hong Kong flick)
Dirty Harry
Deliverance
Bullitt
Cool Hand Luke
French Connection...outstanding movie.

There's a Korean movie about (funnily enough) the Korean war which is a stunning movie but the name has completely escaped me for the moment

Nine Queens....can't rate that movie highly enough.

Crimson River...French movie with Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel...very very good
La Haine...(The Hate) Another extremely good movie abour being the offspring of immigrants in the Paris suburbs.

Will probably think of more but they'll do for now.

Dunno how well known this one is - guess it depends on where you live.
28 Days Later. Cillian Murphy, Christopher Eccleston, Naomie Harris, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson, directed by Danny Boyle.

And the sequel, 28 Weeks Later with Robert Carlyle, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

The first one's better, with a very high standard in all departments. The second one's a little clichéd and Americanised - a low budget franchise trying to be a blockbuster. Still worth a watch though.

The Ninth Configuration (a very loose sequel to The Exorcist, in that they have nothing to do with each other, but it is truly excellent)

Millers Crossing (the BEST Coen Bros. film; yep, even better than Lebowski)

Seven Samurai

Stalker (if you're in a contemplative mood; nothing to do with stalking)

Primer (serious time travel)

El Topo (just to * with your head)

Blue Velvet (* up Americana)

Intacto (Spanish film about luck as a commodity)

The list is endless...

I second Nine Queens, Glen Gary, Glen Ross (also by David Mamet, try The Spanish Prisoner, Red Belt, Heist and Spartan), 12 Angry Men (cinematic perfection) and I Went Down.

Equilibrium. Got buried when it came out because the snooty nosed asshats that makes up 'critics' called it a Matrix rip-off. It's better than that.

Les Valseuses. A French flm from 1974 starring Gerard Depardieu. 2 hours of debauchery. Hilarious, and quite disturbing in places.

Cracking film, got him his role as batman.
Try Rescue Dawn with Bale in it. Based on a true story about an American fighter pilot who is a PoW.
