Caldwell is the only half decent centre back at the moment yet he is played out of position in midfield? Yea he did OK but he is needed at the back all the time.

i know but we are short in midfeild just now so he can play there.
better at the back i agree so maybe when we get the injured players back and hopefully sign a couple in january we should be ok -
It's simple. He's candidate for POTY at the moment playing in defence, so why take him out of it? I'll tell you why. It's to keep Loovens happy. I'm really beginning to think there was no need to sign another CD in the summer. I don't think Loovens looks any better than O'Dea and Kennedy.
But back to the thread. This also weakens the midfield. I like Hartley playing where caldwell was today. At least there's a chance of Hartley sneaking a goal and has more pace than Caldwell. Another reason is it takes Brown out the game. Brown's best attribute is his hassling and on the right he can only tackle and put pressure on the LB or the LM in the opposing side. This also means Nakamura sits on the bench and watches players of less ability trying to play a passing game with little skill and ball control. -

i AGREE, play any of our midfielders before resorting to a centre back (Caldwell).
the SPL is the only league in europe were such a thing would happen. non-sense tactics. -

Yeah, a mean Brown was no-where out on the right today... and we had naka on the bench.. Caldwell should be first choice centre-back .. 3 million wasted on loovens am afraid
-
Agree with you all. Surely Loovens should have been substituted today with Caldwell going back and leaving Hartley on or Naka in.
-
Caldwell is a great defender for us and has been great all season and at the end of last, and i hate to see good players put out of postion caldwell should have definantly started at the back today.
-
i can see wht hes done with Brown told him tae come inside and give hinkel space oot on the right never worked i wouldve played Mizuno as hes a natural wide player with pace as hibs fullbacks were vulnerable

loovens has been a bad signing, waste of good money!!! caldwell should never be deployed in midfield ever again, cb a sometimes hate when wgs plays players out of position, nakamura is a central midfielder and has never been used there, he played robson at lb and he got tore apart, he,s using caldwell in midfield, BIG MISTAKE as was playing scott brown right mid this is all the managers fault and bad tactics imo!!!
-
its just not working, stop playing guys out of position, if there are injuries there must be a young player on the books that deserves a chance

Agree with you all. Not necessarily on the criticism of Loovens, but strachan MUST be criticised for playing caldwell at CM. And to make matters worse, when we were trailing, he decides to take a proper CM off in Hartley and leave Caldwell in midfield. Madness!
-
Im not suprised anymore with strachan, he always makes the wrong decision when it comes to the timing of substitutions and often makes mistakes with his tactics. Im highly critical of him when it comes to this and also his calmness after defeats. Id like to see a manager with abit of enthusiasm and show even a little glimpse of passion for the club.
I would jack him in at the end of the season, hes had a few successful years at the club but thats all we'll get from him. :38: -
I love Caldwell. He is a poor midfielder but he never hides.
How many times did he get on the ball on Sunday? He didnt use it too well but he has the character to take that responsibility and that is fantastic. -

missing the point
the manager should not put a CB in CM end of story
I'll show character if he played me but i'm also PISH in midfield :50: -
I think this is a case of looking for concrete answers to explain a bad couple of results here. Against Aalborg Caldwell was the best man on the park in the midfield, i thought he was excellent. Loovens was poor that night but i've seen enough of him in previous games to believe without doubt he could be a player if he gets his confidence and fitness up.
The Hibs game was absolutely dire. It was arguably the worst we've played all season. But i think some people are going over the top as far as the line-up is concerned. Caldwell is definitely better at centre back, but has proved he can be more than able in a holding role. And to be fair a lot of people give Naka pelters if he has a bad game away from home so it's a bit hypocritical to scream and shout about him not starting away to hibs. Yes he probably should have been brought on at some point but at the end of the day, the manager has made 'strange' selection choices before which have been successful and have rightly earned the manager very high praise. When it doesn't work i think the criticism should be a little less fierce tbh. -
For a start caldwell wasnt excellent against aalborg mate. No celtic player was exceptional that night. He can do a lennon type role well i can admit that. Get the ball, pass it back and make the odd tackle here and there. The only thing he doesnt do like lennon is run like a duck lol :56:
Anyhow i cant see how a defender like caldwell can play a midfield role, its ludacris. :38: -

caldwell should never play in cm,,no vision, passing aint good enough,no composure and has not the positional sense to play there. -
