Not a fan of the guy, and I do think people are too quick to make excuses for him generally and say he was just a harmless clown, but some of the comments in this thread are harsh to say the least. I hope he has the wherewithal to want to change his behaviour before it's too late, but sadly I doubt it.

i hated this clown with a passion when he played for them, don't get why
his imaginary flute playing didn't * of other's cause it made my * blood boil and what the referee's let him get away with on the pitch was nothing
    short of disgraceful.
a sad pathetic geordie * who brought joy to the hun horde's while putting
his own family through * at the same time.

Half the battle against mental illness and addictions is that the person themself MUST want the help that the GPs, Counselors, Family and Friends are offering them. I dont think that is the case in this instance, this is a man that can afford the best care out there but doesnt seem to want to help himself, I bet there's a few people on here who wish they could've had his money at hand to help them beat an illness or an addiction. I just get the feeling he's been forced to get help instead of him ASKING for help.

He's not a well man. And having read his book, it appears he never has been. As others have pointed out, all his so-called "mates" have proven what good friends they were to him by not helping him when he was crying for it and needed it the most. Similarly, the huns, upon realising his problems, promptly transferred him! (Although according to Gascoigne, he resented the establishmentism and was against it from day one, which wouldn't have earned him much friends upstairs).

I don't think Gascoigne is a bad man, but his demons are just too much for him and it's a sad thing to happen to any human being. Remember alcoholism is a mental illness and should be treated as such.

Regarding the flute playing, I don't think he's a bigot at all, just a bit of a knee-* reaction when we were singing "Gazza beats his wife" (which of course he did, and there's no excuses for that - I have a mental problem myself but I'd never even think of attacking my other half). He's admitted himself that it was a stupid thing to do, especially as his dad (who he loves) is Catholic himself.

I'm not optimistic for him, but I wish him the very best.

I have more sympathy for the alcoholics that live on the street with no house, next to no clothes, no family! This guy has it all and is blew it big time. How he still has family to support him is beyond me. Obviously hope the guy can kick the habit before it kicks him but I can't see that happening until his family leave him and he reaches rock bottom.

Still a flute playing * of a man.

He's a poor soul is Gazza. The demon drink has him well and truly grabbed by the testicles. I fully expect him to end up in an early grave, just like George Best did.

    1) Being from a city where serious sectarian aggression is not hard to find, someone playing an imaginary flute simply isn't gonna get to me. He's never had the intelligence to fully understand the symbolism anyway.

    2) What the * has him being from Newcastle got to do with the price of tea in China? :97:
