Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that starlet Patrick Roberts is set to join Celtic.
Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts is set to complete a loan move to Celtic over the weekend, manager Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed.
The England Under-19 international is expected in Glasgow to complete a medical after the Premier League club agreed to a deal with the Scottish champion, but Pellegrini insisted Roberts remains a big part of the club's long-term plans.
Roberts has only been at City for half a season after transferring from Fulham in a deal rumored to be worth 12 million pounds ($17.1 million), making three substitute appearances during the campaign.
He will now continue his career at Celtic, with reports suggesting Ronny Deila's side has negotiated an 18-month loan, although the length of the agreement is yet to be made official.
"He is a very good player and I am sure that Patrick will be a very important player here in the future," Pellegrini said. "Patrick will go on loan to Celtic – the arrangements were made before this [Kevin De Bruyne injury] and we don't want to cut the option to play more games at Celtic.
"I thought it was important that he trained with our first team for the first half of the season. But to play more games for him at Celtic will be better than to stay here and just play some games. It will be a very important option for him."

One of the City fan's comments

A good move. He will win a title and possibly a cup or two in his time there. He will play in front of big crowds at Parkhead and play in Europe. He will play against players who are little more than drunk thugs disguised at footballers who sole sim will be to kick seven bells of * out of him.
All these things will help him grow as a man and as a player, both of which will benefit us.

The rough league is a complete and utter myth, wish people would stop peddling it.

There are bigger, stronger, faster athletes in the Premiership. They hit harder than your journeyman Scottish Premiership centre half.

Armstrong in the middle maybe? We've far too many players in that position though tbh.

This is a solid move. An upgrade on the wings and it gives us a true talented winger going into qualifiers. I think a loan like this, even if we have no chance of signing the player is good for both parties. We still get an upgrade in the position and in the long run it gives him gametime. I just hope City dont give us a bait-n-switch and recall him early after this season.

I don't think that will happen it seems we have built up a relationship with city. Say what you like about them but they usually stick to their word even if it usually a "gentleman's agreement". Same with us I would say IF we did get to the CL and got drawn against them he wouldn't play if they didn't want them to. As if they call him back or we played him against them against their will it would ruin a relationship that could have big benefits for both clubs.

Very happy to have him here for 18 months. It's all about getting into the CL. Hopefully he can play a big part in it.

I don't know which comment you're replying to as you never quoted, so...

You're obviously right in what you're saying, with there being more bigger, stronger athletes but the Scottish game is much rougher than the English game. I don't know why anyone would even try and argue that.

Take Scott Brown ffs... He'd not last long in the premiership but up here, he's brilliant :smiley-laughing002:

Let me say that he doesn't speak for me as a City fan. You've done some great work with our loanees in recent years, whereas most of our loans to other clubs have had very disappointing results or are outright clusterf*cks. We're lucky to have a club willing to give our young players CL experience.

Good luck to young Patrick and your club this season.

maybe you could get your owners to give us a couple of £100 million .
Either that or loan us Aguero and Silva. :icon_mrgreen:

Pretty chuffed with this. 18 months is perfect for everyone. Having a player with Roberts ability around our youngsters should rub off on them too. Well chuffed. :shamrock:

all fair comments to make, and tbh although the comment about the drunk thugs is over the top I see plenty of celtic fans say the same thing so I didn't hold it against man city fans thinking it

I think aswell that with it being a 18 month loan it feels more like a proper signing, wanyama and van dijk both made massive differences in that time

It'll be great to see him in the hoops. I'd say by the time the window comes in we'll have the best squad we've had in a while.

Only down side about this signing is the fact that he will be keeping our players out of the first team. Now, I understand that its not necassarily a bad thing considering he's here till the end of next season, which will make him almost a full member of our squad. However I was excited with the prospect of seeing how Christie could do on the wing, as he's got better pace than Armstrong and has better technical ability. It also looks like Armstrongs finally getting molded into the left hand side the way Deila wants, so I'm hoping this signing doesnt detract from that. Also means that Stokes is effectively done at Celtic, and Mackay-Steven, Forrest, and even Duffy next year have a big task of holding onto the wing positions. Also never know about Elyounoussi maybe coming late this window or in the summer.
