The point I'm making is we have players in our own squad who deserve the chance before someone from Derry City.

I remember the guy playing against Gretna in the Uefa last year, and I said to my old boy that he was something a bit better than anyone else on the pitch. If we get him for a nominal fee, then why not give him a go. Players can improve there game against better players, and he might just be a diamond.

The point people are arguing is that the club he comes from is not something on which to base a value judgement as to whether he should start before some of our reserves.

Not really considering that Kevin Doyle and Shane Long came from Cork City and are now both Ireland Internationalists

No, I haven't seen him play. But i do know that if he was special he would have been picked up long before now. Most English teams scour Ireland for talent and anyone who shows promise is normally picked up at an early age.

Ok, he may be a late bloomer but do we need to take the chance when we have plenty of talent in our own reserves.

So you think this guy can go from Derry city to the CL, if not he's no good to us. If we want to progress we need the real deal.

    He looks to me to be a rough diamond. If we're going to judge players on wiki pages and things like that this;

'As the club ran into financial difficulty, mainly due to the costs surrounding the building of Tallaght Stadium, the club were forced to place all their players on the transfer list for free, however, this excluded McCourt who they felt was an indispensable asset of the club. However, after 7 goals in 17 appearances (3 of which were goal of the season contenders)'

Would suggest to me he clearly has talent but struggles with consistency. Give the guy a stage to prove himself on and lets see what he does. It's a carbon copy of the Robson situation where everyone said he wouldn't be able to step up to our level but give these guys a chance and if they're hungry enough they'll take it.

I understand there could still be gems floating around but they are hard to find. I think we have some real gems in our own squad. Look at the bhoy Caddis. He was given a chance ajnd grabbed it and i personally think he's the best RB at the club ahead of Hinkel.

Fact is that the scouts have seen him in action & have been satisfied with the 200k Derry are asking for.

I'll put my faith in that, the scouting system is good & 200k is closer to our budget than the 7mill for Vukojevic or the 10mill for Pavelchenko - who the scouts have also identified.

I'm perfectly happy signing guys like this (if the scouts are on the button), it's better than Gravesen & Jarosik type signings.

Mowbray has a history of picking guys up for nowt in Ireland, who turn out to be well worth the money.

The thing is if the guys in the reserve team are good enough they will get a chance regardless of who else is at the club so that argument is poor, its all about competition and striving to get better.

He looks the part in the videos, I'm happy we are going in for all sorts of players, when scouting the club should leave no stone unturned.

Thanks for the vids Adam, if he can take that to a higher level then I'll stand corrected.

We do have gems in our own squad and if they are good enough, the Pat McCourts wont stifle them.

Things that must be considered -

    • Our Scouts have probably watched him several times
    • Our Scouts are good at what they do (e.g. unearth gems)
    • Our Scouts know alot more about this guy than 99% on this forum
If he signs, he will get my full support but I have reservations and like with the Robson situation, i will be very glad to be wrong about him

I'd rather we signed Pat McGroin i heard he's got some left foot from his wiki page and he plays for Real Madrid therefore must be good.

The only thing that worries me about our scouts are they are the same ones who recommended Lafferty and valued him around £4m. I hope they got that seriously wrong.

The same scouts who recommended Nakamura, Boruc, Robson, Hartley, Caldwell, Hinkel, McDonald, Hesselink, Gravesen, Jarosik, Donati, Brown, Naismith, Thomson, Samaras etc,

The have gotten it right more than wrong. Maybe Lafferty will turn out to be worth that money, he's touted as a player of the future not a player thats going to rip it up this season. He's a life long Rangers supporter, like Naismith and Davis, he'll never join Celtic

    ..from his wiki page:

McCourt, known to local fans as "Paddy", is noted as one of the most talented players in the League of Ireland and with his dazzling array of skills, he can break down even the strongest of defences. .... Pat is also well known as one half of the irish comedy double act Paddy and Mick.

..just think, he will gub the Huns AND do the half-time entertainment! Now that's what I call value for money!

I feel we should be looking at players who would be expected to be first team picks. We don't need to spend money for players for the SPL, the young lads in the reserves are good enough to step up and supplement the first team.

Oh and I really don't want lafferty and i don't care how good he may be. He's nailed his colours.

I trust WGS enough that he knows what he's doing. Will be good to have the guy on board, he's not costing the earth anyway so anybody who will add depth to the squad is a good idea. :50:

Hammer'* the nail on the head...no pun intended.

doesn't matter what club or league he is coming from. if our scouts think he is good enough, then all we can do is wait for him to don the hoops and judge him from there. none of us can seriously say we can judge as of yet as none of you have seen him play.

if we were spending a few million on the guy, then i could understand the reluctance to sign him. but its only £150k up front rising to £250k and, compared to other players we have, he'll be on the breadline for wages. hardly breaking the bank.

i say let the boy have a chance. wiki pages can be written from anyone about anything and you can only judge a player by watching him yourself!
