A history of achievement under financial constraints?

That will be the boards logic no matter who they go for.

Has everyone forgotten that the new manager's first game will probably be a make or break European tie against more than decent opposition?

He won't have the opportunity to ease himself into the job against SPL cannon fodder. The fact of the matter is that Coyle has zero top flight managerial experience. ZERO.

I wouldn't say mediocre but you and I both know that was always going to be the case no matter what manager they opted for.

    Granted.

However we're going to be the under dogs in a cup competition whoever we draw in the 4th qualifying round. Who has been the best manager in Britain in that position over the last season?

MON was a manager that came in and made player already here better and so did WGS that is the sign of a good manager. Why buy new players if you can get the guys already there playing better.

    Granted.

But, other options might have demanded a moderate kitty to make the team their own.

I'm fed * up of reading "what's he done, what's he achieved?"

I couldn't give two * what he's achieved, it's what he achieves at Celtic that matters.

    * had Mourinho done when he went to Porto?

If youre looking for someone with 'achievement' then they will cost considerably more than what Owen will cost..

well said mate totally agree , whoever it is give them a fighting chance for * sake . If people are giving it all " I wont be back etc etc " then Celtic Park is better off without those people IMHO .

After low-key backroom jobs at Estrela da Amadora and his hometown club Vitória de Setúbal in the early 1990s, Mourinho soon earned the nickname Tradutor (translator), when he worked with Sir Bobby Robson as his translator (technically his interpreter) at both Sporting Lisbon and then F.C. Porto.
He then followed Robson to FC Barcelona in 1996 where he learned Catalan. When Robson left for PSV, Mourinho stayed at Barcelona and worked with Robson's replacement, Dutch coach Louis van Gaal. Mourinho's undoubted confidence and personality helped him get beyond his original role, as he began to participate actively in coaching sessions and management meetings. Eventually, Mourinho coached FC Barcelona B.
Sport Lisboa e Benfica and União de Leiria

In 2000 his chance of becoming a manager finally arrived when he was selected to replace Jupp Heynckes at Lisbon side Benfica after the fourth week of the Portuguese Liga. Mourinho picked Carlos Mozer, a retired but still highly respected Benfica defender, to be his assistant.
However, while the duo was popular, especially after a 3-0 win against fierce rivals Sporting, Benfica's election turned against club president João Vale e Azevedo, and the newly-elected Manuel Vilarinho already had another coach waiting on the wings, Toni - a legend for Benfica's fans. Although Vilarinho had no intention of firing him immediately, Mourinho decided to ask for an extension to his contract in the middle of the season. When the president refused, Mourinho quit Benfica (after just nine games in charge). Vilarinho later said in an interview that if Mourinho had won the championship, he would have extended his contract.
The next season, 2001-02, Mourinho worked for unfashionable mid-tablers União de Leiria, where the club climbed as high as the fourth place.
    F.C. Porto

He was then hand-picked in January 2002 by FCP to replace Octávio Machado as the manager of the badly-motivated and unhappy team, which was already out of contention for the league title and was on the verge of not qualifying for any European competition. Mourinho guided the team to third place that year after a strong 15-game run (WDL 11-2-2) and gave the promise of "making FCP champions next year".

So gamble on the off-chance he turns out to be the Scottish equivalent of Jose Mourinho?

I think you're getting a wee bit over excited here. Some of you should remember that disagreeing with his potential appointment does not mean that he won't get the backing from the support.

I don't think he's good enough at the moment, but if he gets the job I'll fully support him in his efforts to prove that I know * all about football.

I agree but MON and WGS had a much better CV than Coyle. Very successful players with loads of top expereince in Europe. Managers who both had got EPL teams to mid table and to cup finals. Coyle is an unknown quantity. Many ordinary managers have been in an around scrapping teams in the EPL through play offs. Some have made it, some have just lost out but its all the same as its down to a couple of games. There are dozens of guys like that. If I recall right McGhee has been there too. OK its a creditable achievement but is it a flash in the pan and what can a guy with no management expereince in the top leagues or Europe (even as a player) do in the CL. I will have to back whoever is appointed but this would be the biggest gamble since Barnes make no mistake.

That's all anyone can ask for, it's just annoying/disappointing hearing people say they won't be back if so and so is appointed.

    Support whoever is appointed.
