I think MJ could be an excellent 10.

I remember watching him in the 18/19 U21 Scottish Cup final playing there against them. He was one of the few additions to our team who had struggled against them in the U19 cup final and absolutely bossed the game for the first hour. He looked miles ahead of anything else on the park.

If he can get over his injury issues and build his strength a bit he has all the talent to be a real top player.

When did all this 6, 8, 10 patter come about? Even Strachan who normally pillars all the trendy formation and positions chat is going on about Eddy being a 10 not a 9.

Ntcham is a centre mid and a quality one at that when he’s on it.

Ntcham is never a 10. Far too wasteful in front of goal. Drives me mental when I see fans say he is a 10. They obviously haven’t seen some of his shooting.

He is a box to box midfielder. Good energy and a great range of passing.

Rogic is our best number 10. Christie is better deeper as well imo but he is still a better option than Ntcham as the 10 because of the incredible numbers of goals/assists he gets.

It's standard terminology, and has been for decades.

Aye? I’ve been a football fan for decades and guys like Brown, McGregor and Ntcham have always been central midfielders.

    Just shows ye.

    Aye.

They used to be half-backs: times change.

6, 8 and 10 are commonly used and have been for some time. It's a fairly simple and effective way to differentiate between a Scott Brown type and a Stuart Armstrong type, for example.

    That’s my question, when?

Which you’ve incorrectly answered for the reasons I’ve given above.

Brown and Armstrong are both central midfielders with differing attributes. If you really want to be *, you can have a ‘6’ and a ‘6’ that play nothing like each other or a ‘10’ and a ‘10’.

The point being, in context, Ntcham is a centre mid and whether or not he is allowed more freedom to create further forward or is told to sit deeper and dictate tempo is a matter for the coaching staff to decide. Not whether he plays as a ‘6’ or a ‘10’.

Tuesday the 5th of January, 1954.

Your only 'reason' is based entirely on subjective experience: you have been a football fan for decades, and have no recollection of the terms being used until recently.

Just a quicker way of explaining the variances in CMs

Lennon, Petrov and Moravcik were all CMs and played in the same team but they performed different functions.

6 - deeper lying CM/DM, ball winner - Lennon, Kante, Makelele

8 - box-to-box CM, more advanced than the 6, more goals - Petrov, Lampard, Gerrard (boak)

10 - 'in the hole' type, playmaker behind the striker, not doing doggies in defence like a 6 or 8 - Moravcik, Rogic, Riquelme

It just seems like a more concise way of differentiating the CMs function to the team eg. McGregor has played all 3 for us at different points, getting called a quarterback when Brown was out and he played with Rogic and Christie

So you can’t give me an answer, OK.

All over complicated nonsense, as relates to Ntcham. Which is the thread we’re in!

He’s a centre mid who plays centre mid. The debate should be whether or not he’s better slightly further forward or deeper, both of which are fair arguments based on his attributes.

I’ve already started seeing 6.5’s and 8.5’s to try and differentiate even further as well as stealing terms from abroad and from PlayStation games. Utterly pointless.

I think the total opposite tbh. It condenses the expected function of the player into a single digit, without having to go into all the detail.

McGregor or Christie are perfect examples as they've performed all 3 functions for us at different points. They would have the different expectation outlined pre-match, not just "you're playing CM today"

In relation to Ntcham I think it's important as it tells us who he's competing to replace in the team. 6 - Broony, 8 - McGregor or 10 - Christie, as it's currently functioning.
