no, there will never be another draft again. it would be political suicide for anyone who introduced it or supported it. america will be an all volunteer force indefinitely

Let us hope that China can talk some sense to Nth. Korea... that they can be made to listen to, what Lincoln characterised as 'the better angels of their nature'.

Diplomacy must always be the way forward, here's hoping this situation does not escalate.

China controls Pyonyang financially but with them moving inevitably towards a capitalist type economy they have less and less in common with the pretend communist and frankly strange totalitarian state that is N. Korea. It really is a catch-22 type situation, because like Taiwan the US not to mention Japan cannot allow S. Korea's territorial integrity to be breached, nor suffer the kind of military losses and loss of face that she has been suffering of late. Remember that Seoul has not responded to the naval vessel that was sunk with 40 odd deaths a few months ago. Face is something that we may not quite get in all this.

At the same time China will not allow N. Korea to be attacked as she acts as a buffer state. I had thought that until Goerge Bush's 'axis of evil' * that N. Korea was heading towards better relations with the south and was taking billions in aid to counter the famines there. Clinton done much good work here but Bush's bullshit has undermined everything and considering the latest war games planned with the US and S. Korea I'm afraid it is just one big * contest in which ultimately the ordinary people suffer, and I am not being too dramatic in stating that there could be repercussions for us all.

I read that S.Korea are to strengthen their military presence on a couple of those islands, and the U.S have an aircraft carrier on its way.

I think one more stray rocket will cause mayhem.

Yep we are now at the point where S. Korea cannot allow themselves to lose any more 'face' In fact it is probably the yanks who are restraining them thus far. However there is only so much that they can take, understandably.

We must remember that N. Korea have thousands of artillery pieces ranged in on Seoul and could destroy most of that city within a day if things go nuts.

Palin draws fire with North Korea gaffe

    • AP foreign, Friday November 26 2010
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sarah Palin is drawing criticism from around the world after declaring that the United States has to stand with "our North Korean allies."
Palin's gaffe, made Wednesday during an interview on Glenn Beck's syndicated radio show, was quickly corrected by her host. But it drew immediate fire from liberal bloggers, who cited it as an example of the 2008 vice presidential candidate's lack of foreign policy expertise.

Newspapers in Asia and Europe are repeating the criticism. The Times of India says Palin "did it again," while London's Daily Mail says she "may want to brush up on her geography."
The conservative U.S. website The Weekly Standard came to Palin's defense, pointing out that "she correctly identified North Korea as our enemy literally eight seconds before the mix-up."

All politicians have a habit of making stupid mistakes in live interviews, Cameron recently said the UK was the junior party in the fight against the *'s and Obama said "my Muslim faith" during an interview, the gaffs from Bush are practically endless so I don't actually think that Pallins comment are such a big deal.

Don't think she'd make a good president but don't think that particular comment is anything major it would be her lack of policies rather than a slip of the tongue people should focus on.

The fact that the South Korean defence minister has resigned due to criticism over his inadequate response and the fact that North Korea are posturing over the military games planned for the weekend and that the sound of further firing was heard overnight is much more worrying and newsworthy.

yep a slip of the tongue which has been jumped upon. i think a lot more here to be worried about and as you said news worthy. Its looks to me S.korea has shown a tremendious amount of restraint in the face of deliberate provacation from what has to said is a mad man. How much longer they will sit and take this is the worrying part.

It's not as if they can just bomb the place as a lot of their military is underground. In fact reading about it is like reading about a real life Doctor Evil with mountain bases etc

    April 27, 2008

Kim Jong-il builds ‘Thunderbirds’ runway for war in North Korea

An airbase inside a mountain is the latest sign that North Korea, whose links to Syria’s nuclear programme came to light last week, is cranking up its military machine

Michael Sheridan, Far East Correspondent, and Uzi Mahnaimiin in Tel Aviv

div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited {color:#06c;}North Korean military engineers are completing an underground runway beneath a mountain that can protect fighter aircraft from attack until they take off at high speed through the mouth of a tunnel.
The 6,000ft runway is a few minutes’ flying time from the tense front line where the Korean People’s Army faces soldiers from the United States and South Korea.
The project was identified by an air force defector from North Korea and captured on a satellite image by Google Earth, according to reports in the South Korean press last week.
It is one of three underground fighter bases among an elaborate subterranean military infrastructure built to withstand a “shock and awe” assault in the first moments of a war, the defector said.
