Gers launch Novo appeal 15/11/04
Rangers have confirmed they will appeal against the red card shown to striker Nacho Novo in the 1-0 win at Hibernian on Sunday.
The former Dundee striker was dismissed by referee Willie Young for an incident involving Hibs midfielder Craig Rocastle. But the Ibrox club are determined to have Novo available for the crucial Bank of Scotland Premier League visit of Celtic on Saturday and have appealed to the Scottish Football Association.
A Rangers statement said: "Rangers can confirm that an appeal will be lodged with the SFA claiming wrongful dismissal pertaining to Nacho Novo during the Hibernian v Rangers match at Easter Road on Sunday, November 14."
The SFA have already promised to give a decision on any appeal before Saturday. Match official Young gave the red card after his assistant, Steven Craven, alerted him to an off-the-ball incident involving Novo and Rocastle.
Television pictures appeared to show Novo aiming a kick at the on-loan Chelsea player but Rocastle has thrown his backing behind Novo, insisting there was little in the incident.
Rangers manager Alex McLeish indicated after the game that his immediate reaction was to appeal against the red card. And, after consulting chairman David Murray and director of football business Martin Bain, the Ibrox boss will go ahead with the challenge.
The Ibrox side have three days from the date of the match to lodge an appeal and the paperwork has yet to arrive at the offices of the SFA. However, head of disciplinary affairs Drew Herbertson insists any appeal would be heard before Saturday's meeting with Celtic - meaning Novo will only play a part if he succeeds in having the red card quashed.
Herbertson said: "We look at appeals for cases of wrongful dismissal before the next match so whether he will be able to play against Celtic or not is hypothetical. We will have to wait and see whether Rangers lodge an appeal but if the appeal does come forward it will be heard before the next match. Whether he plays or not would depend on the outcome of the appeal and whether it was successful."

If he so much as looked a wee bit angry he should get banned...
should be banned just for being a hun anyway...
I can't believe the huns are appealing, a dundee utd player got sent off a couple weeks ago for headering the ball, ref thought he handled it, they knocked back the appeal there. Typical!
