CELTIC SEEK REPLACEMENT FOR ARTUR BORUC

Celtic are looking to replace keeper Artur Boruc

CELTIC are set to splash out on a replacement keeper for Artur Boruc with Republic of Ireland international Kieren Westwood and former England under 21 star Andy Lonergan top of their shopping list.

The shock move for another top flight goalie who will cost at least £2m will come as a blow to number two Lukasz Zaluska who was expected to take over between the posts next season.

But as Boruc was thrashing out his personal financial package with Serie A side Fiorentina last night it emerged the Hoops had sounded out both Coventry and Preston North End for their stars.

Both keepers are valued higher than the £1.7m Celtic will receive for Boruc and both are also wanted by a host of Premiership clubs including Everton, Spurs, Blackburn and West Brom.

That however has not put off manager Neil Lennon who wants competition for places in every department as he tries to rebuild his own squad to wrest the Title away from Rangers.

Twenty five year old Westwood who has five international caps is available on a free transfer next season but Coventry chairman Ray Ranson insists he will try to tie him down or ensure he only leaves goes for the right price.

The Sky Blues chief said: "All it is at the moment is speculation. We are desperately trying to get him to sign a new contract as he's got 12 months left.If it gets to next summer then we would lose him for nothing on a Bosman free transfer - so that won't happen I can assure you.

"We'd be forced to sell him. He won't be leaving this club for nothing, that's for certain.Until he or his agent turn round to us and say he's definitely not signing a new contract then we are very optimistic.

    SEARCH FOOTBALL for:

"But there is interest in him and rightly so. He's an international goalkeeper now and he's the best goalkeeper outside of the Premier League - and he's only getting better. So it's no big surprise all the big clubs want him."

Preston boss Darren Ferguson is meanwhile determined to hold on to Lonergan insisting he isn't going anywhere and adding : "I think everyone is going to be speculating about some of our more high-profile players, if you want, because I think obviously the rumours are that we are struggling financially.

But the simple thing is that we can forget about all that because there is no way we can sell Andy Lonergan."

Lennon though wants to test their resolve to provide a rival for former Dundee Utd keeper Zaluska and American Dominic Cervi.

Not sure if we need someone else, but I wouldn't mind Westwood. Would like us to spend the money where it is needed. Don't see why we couldn't get more than 1.7m for Boruc.

As soon as Boruc was sold you knew we were going to be linked with everybody.

We defo need to have a choice of 3 keepers incase zaluska or cervi get long term injury or suspension.
Would hate to be cervi the now news like this wont be good for the guys morale.

Or he knows that you need a minimum of three keepers. If one gets injured, we need a backup and a reserve. Mark Brown and Artur Boruc are gone, so we're one short and presumably there's no one good enough in the youth team to take the third spot, so we'll bring someone in.

I think Zaluska remains the favourite to become number one, but this pre-season represents a Cervi's first chance to get himself noticed and it's down to him to take advantage of it.

no he actually said he wants someone to compete for number one its in the sun,i'll find the quote

    edit:here we go

We have to look for a keeper now as well. I have a couple of targets in mind on that score.
"Lukasz has done very well and was impressive at the end of the season.
"He wants to be No1 and there's a bit of hunger about him.
    "We still need competition there

Yeah, he's not going to buy someone who isn't good enough to compete. But as a rule of thumb you do need at least three keepers in the squad.

i dont disagree mate,i think we should bring in a bosman or just a cheap keeper who will compete a bit but zaluska would still be no.1,cause i like zaluska

I don't think we'd be able to find anyone better than Zaluska to be honest, and I'm pretty comfortable with him between the sticks. I agree we need a third goalkeeper though, but not a replacement for Zaluska.

i'd love to see Westwood sign, he's top class and its amazing he hasnt been snapped up by a premiership team. At 25 he's got his best years ahead of him.

plus he's a mass going catholic - another holy goalie

I haven't seen the two lads in question play. But I do believe we will need another goalkeeper to come in.

Westwood seems like he would probably be a good replacement.

Don't think we need to replace artur because zaluska is good enough to be our 1st choice, I would rather we brought in someone to compete for the no.2 spot, another young, cheap up and coming keeper

For my money we need a quality striker, a left back, and a centre back.

If there's money left over for an extra keeper then fair enough, but I don't feel it's a priority.

we dont need a left back we have mulgrew, wilson can switch, caddis can switch, mcginn was decent at the back when he gave it a go and cha du ri can play both sides aswell as all over the park...

we do need a good striker and a solid centre back though...

Mulgrew is mediocre and none of those other players you listed are natural left-backs. You really think that's a satisfactory situation for us to be in? We DO need another left-back and the man we should be going after is Lee Wallace.

As for a new keeper........it doesn't matter who we buy they won't fill Artur's boots. :54:
