I agree. He is the best of the fairly unimpressive usual suspects list. As you say he has SPL and EPL experience which many dont, a good style of football and a good record with youth. He also has the club connection if you care about that sort of thing (which I dont).

That is the problem with the board. Get everything they can at bargain basements. For the past 4/5 year they have told us how well Celtic finances are and how the debt is reduced. Every year profits have been made including the debt reduced. That is all well and good but when it becomes detrimental to the football team then we have a problem. Every year when season tickets are up for renewal we are told there is money to spend and each year we are disapointed in who/what we get. The board now have a chance to show the support that they have ambition and can get the support united again. Strachan split the support from day 1, we now need a manager who will have all the support excited and get the noise level at parkhead raised again, which for the past couple of years has got quieter and quieter. Money now needs to be released for a good manager to improve the team.

Although we are in a strong financial position in terms of Scottish football in terms of European leagues we just can't compete financially it's as simple as that.

We don't know what the budget will be for players this year, but I would be surprised if the new manager got anymore than £10million to spend. Although we are practically debt free we don't have a huge cash surplus sitting in the ban either.

Our profits are minimal, and with there being uncertainty over the future of Setanta and hence the income we receive for broadcasting rights I believe the board will continue to take a cautious approach.

Of course we would all love the see big name players signing for us, but even if we could afford them attracting them to the SPL will be difficult.

I want to see investment in the team, and I think we probably need around 5 good players to go into the first team, not just the squad - but I just can't see that happening as we have to continue to be financially responsible.

The same constraints are in place when it comes to getting a new manager - we can't afford to shop in the higher end of the market. Big name managers are likely to want big wages and big transfer budgets and will also cost more to buy out their contracts. We then still have the problem of attracting them to the SPL when England is the place they want to be as that is where the money is and that's where they see the challenge.

As fans we have to be realistic in our expectations.

Well supposedly Owen Coyle asked for £5m for a striker when he met with Lawell and was told that we dont have that sort of money.

I think they will be looking for someone to work in the same manner as WGS

Great post, put things in perspective well. I agree totally. Not only are we having trouble attracting the big names, i sincerely fear that in the not too distant future we will lose a great number of our young fans to the EP. Some people might think this will never happen but already i see my Grandson and his mates (nine year olds) wearing Man U tops, Liverpool tops etc.....and saying these are their "second team" but because of the tv coverage and the glamour surrounding the players the Ronaldo's Rooney's etc the kids seem far more interested in who will win the EP than they do the SPL. It don't look good for the future.......I know when i was a kid i hardly knew what team was leading the English first division at any given time, nor did i care. The kids these days can tell me who plays for who in the EP but have hardly a clue who plays for the teams in the SPL outside the old firm.

We are being realistic in our expectations. We should be winning the league right now. Rangers finances are in meltdown and we have just lost the league to them due to the board not building from a position of strength. We could and should have buried Rangers last season as the warning signs were there the previous season that rangers were catching us on the pitch. We have now gave them Champions League money to help sort out there finances/team. I don't expect to big massive names to come to the SPL but we can attract a higher level of player from what we have been signing. The signing policy of Celtic lately has been shocking. If Celtic had released 4/5 million in January we would be in the C/L automatically and would have been able to recoup that money in revenue. The board tell us the profits we make and in the past few years me have made decent profits. What is the point in buying average squad players when we are needing a bit quality in the side. We do need 4/5 players of a good standard to get this team back on track and a manager to organise them.

Gordon Strachan decided who to sign, not the board. He was well backed financially...its a myth that he wasnt. Gravesen, Virgo, Jarosik...all signs that he shouldnt have been given more!

It aint garbage. I can guarantee that. If someone offered you the job as manager what would be the first position that you would fill?? Striker! So you suss out the sort of money that you would get before things get any further.

Coyle will probably be afforded that at Burnley so he has to see what he will get at Celtic.

Couldnt care less if you believe me at all, just thought I would let everyone else know what I had been told. Aint that the whole point of a forum???

No..you would wait to be offered the job and had found out the budget. You would not be so blinkered to think its £5m for a striker or nothing as that doesnt make sense.

You CANNOT gurantee it...but feel free to try and persuade us..

I agree that the lack of investment in January cost us last season and that we should have had rangers buried long ago.

However, I don't think as fans we are being realistic when it comes to who we want as manager, we don't have much of option on who to go for, but one thing is for certain, we have to give the new manager 100% support and time to start with as they are likely to be inexperienced at this level, we can't have another Strachan situation where the fans are split and some don't support him from the very start.

If we had spent in january there is no way we can say it would have won us the title...looka t some of strachans signings...very poor. It may have given us a better chance, thats is all.

    Agree with that.

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I believe it was a combination of lack of investment, poor performances and poor decisions that cost us the title, not just one of them.

If we had invested in 1 or 2 players I believe it would have freshened up the team, but I also believed the squad should have been good enough to win as it was.

But back to the topic of Mowbray then I believe that this is the only level of manager we can expect to get in (Mowbray, Coyle etc are all of a similar level imo).

Personally I wouldn't be too disappointed if Mowbray became our next manager, yes I know he has a lack of experience, his team just got relegated and he seemed un-able (or possibly unwilling) to change his style of football to get the results. However, I think his style would suit the players we have at Celtic and he has a record of bringing through young players so things wouldn't be as bleak as some people would have us believe.
