MIKEY JOHNSTON is a major doubt for Celtic’s Champions League qualifying campaign.

SunSport understands the Hoops winger is facing a further spell on the sidelines with a calf injury.




Neil Lennon revealed last week that Johnston was set to see a specialist in a bid to cure the problem.

But the 21-year-old is now expected to be out until at least September in a blow for the Celtic boss.


The first Euro qualifier is on August 18/19 — with the second round a week later.

If the Hoops progress, they will play a third qualifier on September 15/16 before a two-legged play-off later that month.


Johnston could miss all of them and is also set to sit out Scotland Under-21s’ clash with Lithuania on September 8.

Johnston has suffered with injuries in the past two campaigns but Lennon has vowed to support him on his comeback.

Speaking last week, he said: “He’s not had much luck. It’s been a bit stop-start.



But with his age and going through the maturing process he’s picking up injuries. It’s frustrating for him and frustrating for us.”

Celts’ options on the left wing have shrunk since January.



Scott Sinclair was allowed to leave in the winter window for Preston and Jonny Hayes has returned to Aberdeen.


It leaves on-loan Mo Elyounoussi as the only senior player in that role until Johnston regains full fitness.

Given the work load of games we have not having Johnson for at least the next 2 months is a major blow. Elyounoussi is the starter for sure on the left but Johnson is a quality player to have off the bench and a player who has the potential to make it at Celtic in a big way if he can get himself fit and stay fit.

 

Personally i find him very frustrating to watch but not going to bag in him to much as he's still young and not a finished artical but i think lennon was very angry after refusing to come off injured and can maybe see his game time cut short if not one that leaves the club sooner rather than later

 

Injured AGAIN!

Hes going to be a talent, hopefully these setbacks doing ruin him.

I was hoping he would have come back looking a bit bigger, like Klimala! He needs to work on tht upperbody. (Not saying thts y hes injured, just un general)

 

Absolutely no way we let a talent like him go. Reckon he needs to see a specialist and find out what keeps causing these injuries so we can develop a training programme for him.

He has more about him than Forrest at that age and probably has a higher ceiling.

 

Thats a setback, could have done with an injection of pace on left flank.
He does seem brittle. Defo needs to bulk up, gets rag dolled way too easily.

 

If he can contribute as much as Forrest has to Celtic over the years he will become one * of a player.

 

And Johnstone isn’t the fact he got injured in January was because he was young and stupid

100%. Forrest has become an excellent servant after his early injury problems and inconsistency.

I'd say Mikey's probably close to a 22/23 year old Forrest ability wise.

 

We need another left winger for sure, MJ needs time to get totally fit without rushing him into it.
Possibly a wee loan spell similar to Christie did could be the making of him.

 

Just needs to get fit doesn't need a loan..

He's quality..

 

He's a player I just can't take to the way Forrest used to be for most

 

Wouldn't loan him technically and ability wise he is 100% ready, a real star in the making . He just needs a bit of protection to manage his minutes and keep him fit. Before we brought Ely Last summer Johnson had played a lot of minutes for a young lad, he seems prone currently to getting these niggles when playing a lot currently

I agree. There was a point early last season where he was out injured and then he came back and lit the games he was in up. The boy has some talent. It is easy to forget about his age.

He has definitely had his fair share of time off due to injury but that is equally true of Ely last season and yet we are all delighted to have him back. Really Ely only had half a season, if that, and he's a full blown seasoned professional.

I think Mickey will come back stronger this year and be sensational.

I mean Ely can star no problem, but leaves us a bit bear on the left with Qualifiers coming up in a couple weeks
