The injury came from poor play from him just before it.

Tbh I'd loan him out now once he's fit, would rather see the likes of Dembele, Schved and Oko get game time over him.

    No, and here's why!

    This bit is fact!
I was invited by a friend of a parent approx 3-4 years ago to watch a player in a U21 game, at a very prominent London Prem team.

Embarrassingly on arrival the parent in question was walking around the car park complaining bitterly that the medical team supporting his son, were wrong about the state of his damaged hamstring. And implying they were denying him the opportunity to play mins, get fit and ready to compete for the 1st team. Being overly protective etc etc

A week later at another game against decent opposition, this particular lad was now sat on the bench.
Anyhow the player came on at h/t, went on to hit the post, score and then assist another goal before....
Being taken off with a pulled hamstring!!!
It turns out the row of experts sat in the stands (with their laptops) actually knew this lads body better than he did!!

Fast forward a few years, and after all kinds of rehabilitation work involving at some point ‘stem cell work’ I cannot even comprehend, this player is now at a League one development team, but regrettably left physically unable to play football for any sustained period.

The reality is his current contract, which expires in 5-6 months time is likely to be his last one in pro football.

This bit I accept is speculative
Now this kid in some ways is lucky, he was on big money for a number of years. So in some ways is privileged to be financially secure, but he is equally frustrated as his body is effectively ruined and despite many years promise, never quite reached the heights/standards he wanted or expected.

No guarantees that if the medical team had stood firm, life would have turned out different. Or that Celtic have the same resources, medical history or expertise.

But what isn't up for debate is our record with injuries and overplaying is becoming increasingly alarming at the moment, and that we operate in a very similar culture where every game/min/second counts for the team and every single player within its squad. As they look to capitalise on new or extend exciting lucrative deals.

Sorry for the ramble, but I really like MJ as a player, and genuinely hope the injury isn't as bad as everybody is suspecting.

Who wouldn't start greetin' if Lenny told them to * off?

I feel for Mikey but didn't the injury happen because he planted his leg during a challenge?

Hope he recovers fast because that was very uncharacteristic of him.

Unfortunate injury for him but it’s just injury after injury. Last nights incident is maybe void of the point I’m about to make but I don’t think his body is capable of playing at the level we do as well as the frequency and intensity. I know he is still young but he needs to improve his physique and athletic capabilities to match the level of his talent.

Like someone said wee Forrest was the same when he was younger. Think Mikey definitely has talent, hopefully goes on to do as well as Forrest

I think MJ is very talented, however....

It was a ridiculous substitution to make in the first place.

3-0 up, game over and a 3.5 million new striker on the bench and Lenny brings on a sand dancer on to a heavy waterlogged pitch in horrendous conditions. What exactly was he going to learn about MJ in those conditions?

Maybe he wanted Johnston to be the one doing the learning.

I think his ability cannot be discounted. He has bags of potential. He also has a consecutive run of injuries one after the other. He needs a fair amount of conditioning . Can't remember a game never mind a run of games where he hasn't played and come away with some form of niggle. That said the lad is young and it's unnecessary for Lennon to behave in such a manner and he should have known better. If it was 50th min in q tight game fair enough but it was late in a 3 Nil win.

Lenny didn't look too pleased with TW as he came off with Mikey either. Think he made clear his frustration with the amount of injuries after the game too.

It's a shame MJ is out but if it leads to an investigation into our medical side then at least something decent has come out with it.

    So my point stands?

The injury you allude to was either 'visible' - insofar that the physio's could either see a physical change in the limb, soft tissue structure, or a change to the players posture / movement. Or it was 'palpable' - insofar that they could physically feel a change in the limb, soft tissue, or joint structure.

When none of those is present, they then need to rely wholly on what they are being told by the player. And sometimes that includes listening to what the player 'isn't saying', and understanding that sometimes the way the player is protesting that his fitness 'is good' can be a sign of guarding.

But thanks for the 'fact' (and the ! that followed it).

Unfortunately agree. We’ll be lucky to see him this season. He’s really not played a lot of first team football for a player of his ability and he’s going on 21.

Always had a feeling he’d be ruined by injury and he’ll miss too much football during important years. He won’t grow as a player if he can’t get any momentum going. It is gutting as he’s got ability that doesn’t come through often but has happened with a lot of our better prospects to come through, we’re unlucky with that.

I was slated at the start of the season when I said for all this boys talent and genuine promise he was nowhere near ready to be the guy.

Needs to toughen up and always goes missing in a battle. Needs put out on loan like Ajer to get him playing regularly and strengthen him.

Will all the same people still disagree with me now and call me an idiot etc....

Along with the injury/substitution situation and his huff at the free kick on Saturday he’s doing my nut in.

All the talent is there, but needs a better mentality or he will never realise his potential.

i would disagree with this. I think he needs to improve his decision making and manage his body better.

His game isnt about the nitty gritty. His qualities are technical, dribbling, shooting, speed.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon expects Mikey Johnston to be out "long-term" after the Scotland forward suffered suspected knee ligament damage.

The Scottish champions are still assessing the 20-year-old's injury after he went off against St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

"It will be long term," Lennon said. "It was a bad twist.

"It looks like he has twisted the knee and there is a bit of swelling there and ligament damage."

Johnston was injured in a challenge with Saints midfielder David Wotherspoon.
