Celtic to target Greece international goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis if Fraser Forster deal falls through
GREECE hero Michalis Sifakis last night emerged a shock goalkeeping alternative for Celtic.
The 27-year-old kept a crucial clean sheet as the Greeks beat Russia 1-0 and surged into the last eight of Euro 2012.
And with Fraser Forster yet to commit to a £2million transfer from Newcastle to make his stay at Parkhead permanent, Aris ace Sifakis has entered the equation.
Boss Neil Lennon wants Forster as his long-term No.1 but Celtic need a decision soon as they plan for the new season and time is running out for the Geordie to make his mind up.
Lennon has other targets in mind such as Scotland star Craig Gordon and Record Sport now understands the club have now been made aware of Sifakis’ availability on a free transfer and offered the opportunity to sign him.
The Greek was a school chum of current Parkhead star Georgios Samaras and Celtic’s connections with the striker’s management team have brought Sifakis’ position to their attention.
The keeper replaced injured Kostas Chalkias during his country’s second game of the Euros against Czech Republic and hasn’t conceded a goal since.
Lennon wants the position sorted and is hoping a Forster deal is done but the Sifakis situation confirms Celtic have options.
The club also have choices with outfield players and are understood to have knocked back an offer of £6million from Rubin Kazan for Ki Sung-Yueng at the weekend.
However, the Russians attempted to play down their interest last night with English clubs also keen on the 23-year-old.
Rubin spokesman Maksim Lupuchov said: “This has nothing to do with reality and they want to make the price of the player more expensive.”
QPR and Liverpool are among the interested clubs south of the border and Celtic are also fielding suitors for Kenyan Victor Wanyama.
Lennon could sell to fund signings but centre-back target Matt Mills, of Leicester, and the Republic of Ireland’s free agent midfielder Keith Andrews are both now destined for Bolton.
Hugo Rodallega, who has rejected a new deal at Wigan, is also understood to be a target and the Colombian striker insists he’s ready to decide.
Rodallega said: “There are some big names interested in me and clubs have spoken with my agent. I now have to make my decision.”

havent seen him play so cant comment on that. Hopefully we'll have closure on the Forster team one way or another this week. Cannot let that drag on any longer.
-
He looked decent, especially with a dodgy backline. I would prefer Forster though.

Is this the one that started the tournament and flaps at everything?? If so I hope this is BS! If it is the other keeper then no comment really as I havnt seen enough of him but he must not be great to be 2nd choice for greece.
Edit: Just read its the sub guy, not to confident in him if since he is behind flappy McFlapflap.Last edited by a moderator: Jun 18, 2012 -

This is weird. I signed him in FM11 after him being scouted and i signed him for like 1m. Turned out to be amazing. Won the Europa league with him in goal so you never know :56:

Doubt we will get any of they players mentioned. If not Forster, I'd love Boruc or Gordon.

Would take him after what I've seen

thought he looked a bit dodgy at times in the first couple of matches. Cant remember much from the russian game mind you so cant comment on his performance in that.
edit: just read above that this wasnt the guy that played the first match. Still, Id rather Forster, or even go back in for young polish boy Sandomierski.Last edited by a moderator: Jun 18, 2012 -

It think it's starting to get pretty obvious that FF won't sign so we're looking for alternatives. -

Good option if FF doesn't sign.
Also Sifakis has won the Superleague best goalkeeper award in 2010 and 2011...
As always, Lenny's signings have mostly been great and in he I trust!!!
Hail Hail -
Veery good GK
