Was just posing that question in general mate :50:

Well, there we were supposedly looking at a latvian guy from Lech Poznan (just signed for Hamburg).

These are the kind of obscure targets we should be going for.

Michael Owen about 4-5 years ago I'd have screamed like a wee lassie if we got him, well past his sell by date now.

No doubt a great player in his heyday - infact, one of my favourite strikers.

There is absolutely no point in his signing. We are no longer needing short-term signings to help our team get out of a sticky situation (i.e. Majstorovic being signed to help plug the defensive frailties etc.)

We are building a team that is made to last - singing players like Kayal etc. are the future for Celtic.

Yes, experience is required, but not at any cost. We need an experienced player who can fit in with the formation of the squad, and we need a leader amongst young men.

    For me, not Michael Owen.

I like Owen and I do reckon he would do a job up here if he could stay fit. His goal-scoring record isn't in question but his injury record is. We've already got players that are very good in the penalty box, so even with a pay-as-you-play deal, I'd prefer we looked elsewhere tbh.

Not the kind of striker we lack.

Doesn't add anything and he wouldn't take a pay-as-you-play offer because he won't be short of offers down south who will pay him a guaranteed wage.

We already have Hooper as a poacher and Samaras, Stokes & Watt who can play off him. However, if we are to add a striker we could do with a big nasty * of a striker who rag-dolls defenders.

    Pavel pogrebnyak would be perfect.

The same goes for defenders we need someone who adds something different to our line up. We have a footballing centre half in Mulgrew and an all rounder in Rogne (who's still progressing as a player), but we need a centre half who destroys strikers and wins everything in the air.

no thanks. though he is a goal scorer, he is far too much of a risk with injuries. plus he isnt what we need, too similar to hooper and stokes. id rather we went and bought a rhodes type.

If he came on a pay as you play deal then maybe. Would much rather us sign a target man for the long term.

See the problem for me is, in the longterm, we are * crying out for a bit of class experience on the pitch. As soon as we get that to help some of the younger heads out on the park, a player who can be counted on as he has been there, done that. A clued up player.

    Michael Owen is that.

I'm on the fence on this one, a helluva lot of positives and only a few negatives but they are big * off negatives.

WTFunk would we want michael 'glass knees' owen up here for when we have a good crop of young players that are willing to go the extra mile to prove themselves and establish themselves, where as he would be coming here, milking a top earner wage and be thinking 'easy ride' in the SPL.

    Next.

    This is what I'm thinking.

Partner Hoops with Owen up front, and every game he would be learning and developing.

Bottom line though, I simply don't see Owen coming to the SPL. The only motivation would be CL football. Depends what sort of priority he places on that...

If he thinks the Championship is below him I can't see him wanting to play in the SPL? Tbh, wouldn't take him anyway.

Would have taken him a few years ago but these days football for him seems to take second place to his race horse hobby.....No Thanks. We need someone who is FULLY comitted to playing week in week out for the type of wages he would require. Not denying that he is a decent player, but I don't think his heart has been fully in the game for some time now.

See in an ideal world, you could bring Pogrebnyak in and have Owen around distilling his wisdom on the young guns. Can you imagine the benefit that Watt an Keatings would get from simply being around this guy for 2 seasons or so (providing they still got adequate game time). Truth of the matter is, we can't afford it and a target man is the order of the day. I hope we pursue the big man with some gusto.

As soon as I saw Owen had been released from Man U I was waiting for this thread to appear. Personally I'm undecided, on the one hand he's a proven goalscorer who will bring some great experience to the team, but on the other he'd probably command quite a high wage, and with his fitness questionable, do we want to be paying that for someone who probably won't be able to play all that much?
I do think he'd come here though. He's played at Celtic park before, so he knows how fantastic it is, European football would be something he'd be looking for, and he'd be all but guaranteed first team football when fit.

agree with everything you say here. Especially about Pogrebnyak, would be unreal to get him here but I doubt it :54: free agent in the summer too Im sure?

Get tae * Owen, we've built a young team and you don't fit into it. Besides, you'll be injured for half the season anyway while we spend megabucks paying for you...
