Maradona got snapped like * constantly and still done the business. I don't think Messi would have handled what he did back then. Maradona today would have none of that and would have an even better career. Maradona inspired that world cup winning team and the whole of Argentina in 86.

Do you think he would have the mentality to keep up with the fitness requirements of the modern game? He never had the mentality to do so back then.

He inspired them but he did have others to rely on, that’s the difference between the two teams for me.

Regardless of how * Argentina are now, the real matter of fact is that when the likes of Maradona et al were playing, the World Cup was THE pinnacle of world football. That's why such emphasis was placed on who won it, who performed the best in it etc.

In modern day fitba, the Champions League is now mostly seen as the most prestigious tournament in World Football.

The WC is great and all, but it just doesn't hold itself in the same esteem as what it once did, for myself included.

Also very true, the last great world cup for me was 98.

Since then the footballs been a bit substandard and meh tbh. Spain in 2010 aside but they were only the 1 team and built around Barcelona of that time, who were better.

I get what your saying but Messi's Argentina side was dripping with talent. What im saying is if you put a leader like Maradona who can inspire the team and the whole country the way that he could, that can be the difference.

For me yes although Messi has not won a world cup his record
I agree but a World cup final back then was 10x the pressure of a champions league final now.

World Cup '98 for me still held that piece of magic around football - maybe that's because I was still young enough that it was my SOLE interest in life, are that it was one of the truly great tournaments of all time, I dunno.

Korea 2002 was a great one for me, mostly because Ireland were in it at the time, but it was still very much enjoyable.

All the rest (overall) have been *.

98 was what got me absolutely obsessed with football. That France and Brazil teams hold a special place in my heart, as does the Dutch and Croatian teams that played in that tourny.

I like both of them but have always preferred Messi overall.

    Messi is the GOAT.

    Ronaldo is top 4.

    Same here mate.

Zidane was like a mixture of Superman and Baryshnicov in that tournie.

Absolutely majestic and personified everything great about football.

I don’t think it can be argued that Messi doesn’t do that for Argentina. He has been single handedly dragging them through when they shouldn’t be anywhere, have you seen them play without him? It’s * pathetic man. A bunch of lost boys, absolutely pathetic.

Right now Argentina are Messi offensively and Mascherano defensively and literally nothing else. It’s * bonkers considering their talent but the * behind closed doors that the squads really unhappy with, with the FA and that, have completely * them over I think.

Messi gets his fair share of kickings in modern terms as well and never really chooses to roll around. I'm sure he'd be fine.

It is all hypothetical anyway and an argument which will never really be settled for many. Even if Messi does go on to lift a world cup.

Him in the final was something else, one of the biggest ‘what if?’ scenarios in football for me is if Ronaldo hadn’t took that fit before the final. I’d have loved to have seen that because that was two * great teams, one had their talisman and the other had a shadow of theirs.

Aye, that's a fair ol' question, suppose we'll never know.

One thing that might swing in favour of suggesting Brazil would have won it if Ronaldo were fully fit, is that Ronaldo (on a slight decline from his TOP self) still single-handedly raped Germany four years later - even with that shocking hair do :56:

That was unbelievable what he did, he shouldn’t have even made it on to the plane with those injuries and he pulled out some supernatural performances.

Maybe he had a wee bit of Maradona’s marching powder to see him through :56:

Aye man, some player was Ronaldo - in fact, as far as I'm concerned he's better than Pele in ALL manner.

I hold him in such high regard that it SERIOUSLY annoys the * out of me when he's referred to as "Fat Ronaldo".

I think if 'day Ronaldo didn't suffer injuries etc he's probably be the best ever, he's always been my favourite player, don't know anyone that didn't like him tbh

He definitely could have been. He scored 49 goals in a season back in a time that 30 was viewed as exceptional.
