Messi is better than both Maradona and Pele right now.

Pele is just bitter because two Argentinians are better than him.

He was probably asked about the economy, and that was his response. :56:

I agree, but i hate that you HAVE to win the CL to have a chance on winning Ballon D'or. Its not one player who wins the CL, its the team.

Messi didn't win the Championship League in 2010 and he still won it.

Daft argument. Paolo Maldini always played with world-class footballers. I don't doubt that he is one of the finest defenders to ever grace a football pitch.

It's not daft to suggest that Messi is having a much easier time of it playing with the greatest club side ever than if he could reproduce the same form playing in a different formation with poorer players. So far he hasn't, although I still think he's one of the best ever.

If it wasn't for Messi it Barca wouldn't be the greatest side ever.

He's been excellent for Argentina in my opinion.

He creates so much for them.

He hasn't played at nearly the same level for Argentina yet imo.

That said, if he has even another two or three years playing at the same level for Barca then he will deserve the tag of best ever.

But it's not purely about ability, it's about consistency over a long period of time and performing to the same standard in different circumstances.

He probably will become the best ever but I don't think he deserves the title yet.

The mere fact that so many people are discussing whether or not he's the best ever tells you everything you need to know.

The Argentinians don't seem to agree.

Remember reading about him being booed off the pitch. Seems the general consensus amongst Argentine fans is that he plays better and works harder when playing for Barca.

IIRC he also had a burst up with his international team mates after a string of poor performances.

Messi is the best ever, opposition fitness and tactics are 100x's better now than even in maradonna's days. Pele is a pompus * imo, good player but loves himself too much.

He's played 66 times scored 19 times and assisted 20 times. 10 of those assists came last year.

That's a fantastic record. Especially for a 24 year old and as I have said many times he's won more than 99% of players will at international level.

He will score more goals for Argentina than Maradonna did.

Messi and Argentina.....hmmm, well, it seems he doesnt perform quite the way he does for Barca when playing for argentina.....BUT, he isnt the flop people make him out to be and tbh he's pretty good for Argentina, just not quite as good as at Barca, but....so many players are better at club level and worse at inernational and vice versa

It's probably because of the huge standards he has set himself. There is no doubt that he plays better for Barca though.

    Maradona takes aim at Pele

"After all, he hasn't done anything for 20 years, not even making a trip to the supermarket. The only time we see him is at awards ceremonies for FIFA, and even then he looks likes a remote-controlled puppet." :56:

It is way way to early to be talking about Messi and where he stands exactly in the all time list of footballs greats. He is only 24 lets remember not even into his peak career years which is incredible given his level of play already. Facts are that if he stays injury free or at least relatively injury free Messi is going to without doubt be right there at the top of the list when it comes to the games greats. There will always be arguments as to who is the greatest but clearly Messi will be one of the names in the argument.

As for Pele he really doesn't come over well in what he said there at all. Pretty arrogant about himself and petty about Messi really. Pity really you would think a great like Pele would admire and enthuse about the joy and creativity with which Messi plays the game. Yet no Pele is more insterested in pumping his chest and saying I was better. Sad and pathetic really.

if pele is so confident in his ability to score goals why did he stay in brazil who have terrible defences and a terrible league system based on geography rather than talent. plus, messi is an athlete. he's fast, deceptively strong, agile and smart. both in their prime messi would run rings round pele. plus i doubt messi will ever go and play for a New York team to become a big fish in a little puddle and to fill his wallet
