i'll always remember those things too but what i'll always remember first is him leaving us on a free transfer. i took down my JC posters and burnt them in the back garden.

i was only 10 or so and a hoops fanatic. bedroom wall painted green and white hoops, posters everywhere, the club wasn't in good shape financially either and we lost a minimum of £2mill on collins. i was a foul tempered wee *. i've mellowed a bit now though, honest:icon_mrgreen:

The maestro was possibly the best midfielder I have seen playing in the hoops.

Collins for me....both players played during relatively barren times, and Collins / Bosman horror p^ssed a lot of folk off (quite rightly), but if you look at what he achieved in the game after leaving - a semi final appearance in the Champion's League for starters - he had far more ability that mcstay for me. Also FAR more of a goal threat as Paul67 mentioned earlier.

There is a lot of sentimentality surrounding McStay for all the right reasons - loyal to Celtic all his career which is all too rare these days, but looking at it subjectively i find it difficult to argue that Collins had more quality.:50:

daver i dont think because collins played in a CL semi final means anything other than he played in a better team than mc stay tbh. if the maestro had gone to juve or liverpool when he had the chance he'd have played in CL semi's too

Fair enough Clagan, and at least Mcstay is in the hall of fame (the same cannot be said for Collins), but i always thought of Collins as a far far more gifted played technically; where Collins had the vision, McStay was an inspirational captain....but for me far more workmanlike. He endeared himself to the fans because of grit / determination which are wonderful attributes, and every team needs at LEAST one player like that in the team; i just always think of Collins as being a more talented player, however, which is the reason i went for him.

I have no doubt that McStay could (and arguably should when you look back at it) have moved on; nonetheless, it is the fact that he didn't that endears him so much to so many. Each to their own though mate.:50:

each to their own indeed mate:50:

not too sure about mc stay being workmanlike, he was incredibly gifted on the ball and his vision and passing were superb. he could get stuck in and mix it too. 2 great players, shame they didn't play together longer

I actually agree with that - "workmanlike" was the wrong choice of word (my old man would have clipped me around the ear for that cheek of El Maestro!):icon_mrgreen:

I remember as a young bhoy my first propper football was a Mitre Paul Mcstay. I totally idolised the man! Both were fantastic to watch, but if i had to pick one as a manager, it would have to be Mcstay and i would build my team around him. His famous words "There's a real buzz around the place." LEGEND!
