Think that the Mayan Civilization ended waaaay long before 2012.
Respect to them for their mathematics & astrology, not sure about the human sacrifice & lying down an entire civilization to a few Spanish "Gods".
There lies the perils of religion. -
The date will be off anyway, the Maya civilization lived so long ago, since that time the date hasn't been kept correctly from that time. I remember reading something saying we're still in the 18C or something, just that time hasn't been kept accurately throughout time. Not sure how true this is, read it a long time ago.

Think of it this way mate.
Our calender for this year finishes December the 30th. Does that mean we'll all die on that day? No! The Mayan calender is simply another version thought up by a different civilisation which has been hijacked by people trying to make money from this whole thing.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 8, 2012 -
I've had 4 (in)credible end of the world dates in my lifetime and I'm still here.
I thought it might be the end of the huns but they will go much sooner than the Mayan calender -
-
It doesn't even say how we're supposed to die, does it?
Edit-nvm, read the above link. -
No, it will not end. Only in 4 billion years :icon_mrgreen:

Load of bull.was at the Mayan ruins when on holiday and tour guide who was very passionate about the mayans said it was bullshit.have to take your hat off too the Mayans tho.the way they built chichen itza temple was amazing.they built at a certain angle that twice a year the reflection of the sun causes what looks like a snakes body down the temple stairs leading to the big snakes head statue at the bottom.genius stuff

Didn't the Mayans also believe in a large serpent *? I think I read that somewhere, anyway ,I see it as a load of *, the only real concern I have is the people who believe in it and will get real nutty on Dec 21st.

It's not that their calendar ended, it's just the end of a cycle, and at the end of each cycle the world like, refreshes and something big happens. Who knows!
-
I personally can't wait until December 21st, just so I can laugh in the face of all the people who actually believed that the world would end.
This sort of thing has been done to death. It was meant to end with the beginning of the new millennium in 2000 and then in 2006 when that Large Hadron Collider thing done something that now escapes my mind.
And then, Camping predicted it would end on both 21st May and 21st October 2011, both of which passed without incident. -
-
When we were in Mexico we went to Chichen Itza and the wee mayan guy said the end of world stuff is all lies.
-
And they rightly point out that the end of the calendar means the end of an Age, not the end of Everything.
But then they do the typical scientist thing of evaluating everything in terms merely of the scientific method, and implicitly ruling out any other form of knowledge.
For anyone interested in what the Mayan elders actually predict regarding 2012, without a lot of non-Mayans wanting to stick their oar in, this is an interesting source:
