I'd have him back if/when Lenny leaves. Will never happen though.

It would be no different than it is now under Lennon.

Perhaps tactically Martin has a bit more experience and knowledge.

But he would not be able to put together anything near the Celtic side we had when he was in charge. The funding for the players simply isn't there today.

We'd be in the same position. A domestic giant who struggles in the Champions League Group stages.

I will always be thankful to Martin O'Neill for the way he turned us around and the many great days and memories he gave us during his 5 years in charge. His efforts made all the more impressive now that we know he was up against a hun team that was cheating on a massive scale. But Neil Lennon is our manager now and I am very happy about that and hope that Lennon will be our manager for many seasons to come. Besides O'Neill is now Ireland manager and I am very happy about that as well.

There weren't many of them left either. Strachan claimed he was left with only 14 first team players, who as you say were often nearer the tail end of their careers.

I personally wouldn't have him back despite his great success first time around. He was precisely the manager we needed at the time and he definitely did well with the money he was provided. I do however think that MON as Celtic manager suited the early part of the last decade both tactically and financially but would not necessarily be great at this point in time.

Either way it is all academic as he seems to be enjoying himself in his current job.

I dont say it intending to be the * as it may sound i love the guy gave me some of the happiest memories of my life . But i know alot of people who think it . No he couldn't. Gordon Strachan spent more money than him, he also had bigger wages.

I voted No... Not because I don't rate Martin O'Neil as a manager or am not grateful for everything he did for us but because we have an up and coming young manager in Neil Lennon who is building an exciting team which has a big future ahead of it...

In my opinion I find it disgusting that we are discussing other managers when we are in the position we are currently in on the field! Some people on this forum need to take a good look at themselves in the mirror!

Not with this pathetic nostalgic sh*t again... Bring back Boruc and McGeady too why don't you?

Some people just can't let the past stay in the past. The whole point of development is to go FORWARD not BACKWARDS. MON was great when he was here but it became apparent from his work in the EPL that he can't cope with modern trends in football.

I felt the same way mate, however surely the fact that Martin is just embarking on a new career means this thread is purely hypothetical.

That being said I hate these kinds of topics, hypothetical or not, hopefully the manager is here for years to come.

In no way whatsoever. Had his time, and I thank him for it hugely. His time has now passed, and we move onwards. Completely different ball game for a Celtic manager these days in terms of finance / scouting / development; and it was difficult enough when 18 million on 3 players was still viable.

I look back on his years fondly, while realising he would in no way be the right man for the job as things stand. IMO.

I think Martin will always be the right man for the job, should it ever become available again.

    No thank you.

The players we have at the club right now are set up to play attractive, slick football.

O'Neill would change the style for the worse, and certainly our youths would most likely have next to no chance of breaking through into the first team.

He'll never be Celtic manager again anyway, he has a great job with the FAI.

To be fair he did bring through Maloney, McGeady, Marshall and Kennedy.

Don't want or need him back, no reason for it.

Thats true. However Strachan was never allowed to spend £6m outright, whereas MON had that sort of spending ability.

Never knew about the wages. I thought Strachan was brought in with the intention of lowering the wages? :smiley-laughing002:
