Sorry in advance if this has been brought up/asked before.
What d'you guys think given Celtics "max wage policy" cap.??
If Celtic had less total squad members, I'm thinking we could afford to pay higher wages and therefore
have a better chance of attracting higher quality players.
Not only that... we would have a better chance of keeping them andor demanding more money for transfers.
win/win
Not saying i would like celtic to change their business model, but... and there's the paradox.

Again, if this has already been discussed(probably has but couldn't find), could an admin merge/delete it.

It’s hard to know for sure, but our wage structure definitely does constrain us and that’s just the way it is in Scotland..
You make a valid point with the amount of players we have.. but we have went all out with wages when the player fits the bill, usually a loan like the Keane’s or Bellamy..
We have to look at it again in the future, but we definitely live within our means.Last edited: Sep 6, 2019paulie67 likes this. -

We have reduced our to overall wage bill by 20% from last season given the players who have left and who has replaced them including the manager.
We set our max and we used heavy incentives in our contracts.
We will not break our structure imo unless it was a serious marquee signing.
We had to reduce the wage bill for the company and club as a whole £59.7m was unsustainable (that amount is from July 17 - June 18)
Company accounts are out next week or the week later and should show what we spent 18-19 I would expect it to be down based on the fact
Rodgers and his staff left in February
We failed to make UCL group stages.
The bill for 19-20 will fall again also! -
Definitely possible, if we could spend 59 mill a year in wages on a squad that was bloated with dross and had about 40 players in it you’d think we could spend that 59 mill on 25 players that are better

Of that £59m it will be interesting to see the reduction in the 18/19 accounts for failure to qualify for UCL because I feel that will be a big chunk! -

As you say, ~60mil is unsustainable from a scottish football club pov.
Although with, less squad/higher wages/better quality/longevity maybe... we could be near guaranteeing CL group stages.
I would love if the next time we got to CL group stages or, the following year group stages...
for big Pedro to say, "aye fekit' let's try this change of plan for one or two years and see if we can sustain it".
It's a risk for sure, if we were to do it without being in the CL group stages,
but being in them, there would be no, or much less risk.
here's why i'm thinking that.
1./ we qualify CL... ~£30/35mil guaranteed.
So let's say, that then let's us pay these higher wages i'm talking about.
If everything goes well and we get CL the next season and there's still a good/decent turnover.
...np's, let's keep going. win/win.
2./ we qualify CL... ~£30-35mil guaranteed.
Exception, we do not get CL the year after, then we can either go back to the old tested model or, then take the risk for another year.

The thing is right now, we're only ever gonna' be an EL team, unless we have luck along the way.
I don't want us to be relying on luck, i want us to be a force in europe again, where ppl * themselves at
the thought of coming to Parkheid or as eufa would say, Celtic Park.
I hope you get what i mean.Last edited: Sep 6, 2019 -
I thought our wage bill would have dropped more than 10% over the summer. I was thinking to late 40s.

The fact that BR and his crew have departed, should see a significant reduction-especially when it was reported that deadbeat Congerton was on over 1M a year, talk about money for auld rope.
I like the idea of 59M being paid to 25 quality players, as opposed to 40 bloated squad.
Still need to offload some of our freeloaders from BR era. -

Does wage bill include all club staff or players?I think taking the attitude that £59m on 25 players sounds too much on too few. Some players will not work out so you need to be able to say, yeah they failed (Hendry) but we can afford to bring someone else while paying failed person x.

No offence to anyone, but we've had this discussion in a hundred different questions, a thousand times - it's always a great THEORETICAL question, but ultimately, while we play about 65 games a year, getting the * kicked out of us every week through Scottish winters and want to include development players for progression, we need a larger squad - we could definitely do with less than we have, but not by much.
And... while we're only getting Scottish revenue, with a CHANCE of European money, we can't afford high wages. This us entirely of media/UEFA making, but it's the cards we've been dealt.
It's a * catch 22, but there you go...Blochairnbhoy likes this. -

Martin O'Neil's squad had far less players and much higher wages. He had success. But what happened was we ended up with a * hot first team, but a poor squad overall.
