Any ones that are PIRA. Also any that actually use the word IRA regardless of whether its old or new. Those three letters are a disaster in term of offence, regardless of the historical details. So, probably all of the above except the soldier song.

Please tell me how 'Amhran na bhFiann, can be offensive to anyone? It is the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland and is played before many sporting events world wide. It is sung to remind people where the majority of our fans originated from. I am so proud when singing it, in English or in Irish. But I do wish people would sing it correctly. There is no mention of the Pope in the original song.
Also do you not think it would a great time to bring back A Nation Once Again!

I always laugh when the Jock Stein quote is brought upon in these debates. Stein himself used to request that Republican songs (Sean South of Garryowen) were to be played before important European games as he knew it would get the crowd right up for it.

Are you saying you would like the anthem not to be sung at CP?

The only problem I have with it, is that it is sung in English (with the horrendous and disrespectful add-ons).

I have been told by someone who knows these things that glorifying past or present illegal groups is covered in hate crime laws or the like.

There is no reference to the IRA in Aiden McAnespie.

Not at all, I agree with you. If it is sung in its proper context, as the national anthem then fine. But its not. Its delivered as a political "get it up ye".

As are most of the rebel songs. Sung in their own context with no extras they are all great songs, but too many are embellished and that is what spoils them.

Original was written in English, true. But it is now sang in Irish and has been for quite some time.

I'm not been unrealistic im just wondering as I don't think they are classed as religious bigotry or racist songs. They are historic folk songs surely, just because they are republican doesn't mean they are offensive. People saying that Celtic Park should be free of politics are being a bit naive, the club has always been linked to politics.

Maybe * the queen, PIRA and other chants are different, but they ain't songs.

If everyone stops singing songs that offend anyone where does it end?

"they make a solitude and call it peace." - Calgacus (apparently).

It'll all end with clapping hands after a goal.

great comments from lennon....much better than walter "we probably shouldn't be singing these anymore" smith. hopefully the minority now stop the PIRA chants, the add-ons to the other songs and "like me and you, he's a provo too", don't have a problem with the other rebel songs. let's give them absolutely nothing to pin on us next season and we can really embarrass them! that is if the green brigade behave themselves on november 11th this year...

I totally agree. I think its hard not to feel there is a of get it up ye feelings inspiring the singing of non-football songs at away games. That is where we stray too close to Rangers territory for comfort i.e. songs sung knowing they cause offense seems to be part of the fun for some folk.

I think songs like this and Paddys * army do not help at all and make it easier for those who dont like us to dehumanise them as republican bogy men. Its not really fair too because its making assumptions about their views.
