Nothing wrong with the Irish National anthem, except imo it shouldbe sung in Irish gaelic, not English.

But I see where Lennon is coming from, and I totally agree with him here. But I do think that Celtic FC should come out and say what is allowed and what is not. It's best if ALL Celtic fans got behind this instead of trying to be rebels about it.

Yesssss, this. One word would save our fans so much hassle.

I don't think anyone wants the fans to stop singing the rebel songs, just stop the ooh ahh up the ra chants and the PIRA chants and stuff like that.

I'm not being funny but how can we have sanctions imposed for singing these songs?

    STV's take on the story:

Pressure is being put on the clubs(Celtic & Rangers)to get the fans to refrain from singing offensive songs....we are all well aware that the IRA and * the Queen and the UDA creeps in now and again....This will not be tolerated in any shape or form now and will only bring fines and sanctions to Celtic's doorstep.
We just need to look at our rivals across the city,UEFA have started to clamp down on this and the fines will only get bigger and sanctions get tougher with with each repeat offense....This is the last thing I want for Celtic.
I'm immensley proud of our club and supporters and dread getting dragged into the mire along with Rangers.
Trust me,there are plenty of people queuing up to tar and feather us,if not crucify us....let's be smart and avoid gifting them an excuse.

What a brave statement to come out with from a manager who has been under the most terrible pressure this season.

Be interesting now to see who many people really are "Neil Lennon".

I dont think for a moment the board has influenced his comments. He is too strong headed for that and wouldnt come out with something he didnt believe in.

For those posters that come on here and ask "what songs are offensive?" or "can we get clarification?" Behave yerselves. You know exactly what he is on about.

The Republican songs, references to RA/ IRA etc are offensive to many people in this country. They dont get our background, and why should they. As a Scottish club we need to be more aware of what our singing is now doing to our club. Our manager is under security and at risk from the morons down Govan way and some of them will imagine certain songs give them the right to act that way. Its incredibly naive to think otherwise.

Our club is a Scottish Club with Irish Roots. There is no need to bring any politics or religion into it. We have now had two great managers comment on it. Look at their words closely and think what we are doing to our club, do we want to move into a new era with Neil Lennon, free from the baggage of the Republicanism or not?

"As we move towards next season it is vitally important that we ensure we do so positively." - Neil Lennon 2011

"Surely there are enough Celtic songs without introducing religion or politics or anything else?" - Jock Stein 1972

If you wont listen to Neil, then perhaps take heed of our greatest ever manager.

Can we still sing The Merry Ploughboy, after all, it was at Celtic Park where I first learned all the words. It was played over the tannoy before every home game along with the Celtic Song.

Ps only kiddin, but it does show us all how the club has moved on.

As long as they never remove the Tricolour!

:50::50::50: I am impressed by this. Bit vague though and a lot of fans have unrealistic ideas of what is 'offensive'. If we eliminated offensive songs and chants that WOULD include political ones referring to past of present paramilitary groups.

It's actually a very valid point Kemo...

We all know that the 'PIRA, IRA' etc.....is what Lenny is specifically speaking of...

But, if it cutting out songs on the grounds of being offensive....you do realise that the majority of of the home support of the grounds we play away at, boo us when we sign 'Fields of Athenry' and 'Amhran na bhFiann' mate.......especially if they 'dont get our background'.

My point is, where does the songs that can be categorized by some as 'offensive' start and finish?

Until an official document is produced by Celtic F.C on the songs, chants etc they deem unacceptable at Parkhead, or away, there is a right to ask this question:50:

He said offensive, not sectarian. Offensive does include those songs because they do offend a lot of people whether we like it or not. I think Lenny was clever to use the word offensive. Offensive is in the eye/ears of the beholders and its not in our gift to decide what Celtic songs are offensive. Similarly its more important what Rangers songs we think are offensive not which Rangers songs Rangers fans find offensive.

No need to shout Gunt. I dont think anyone finds The Fields of Athenry offensive, its sung up and down the country.

As for the others, I think Jock Stein said it right, dont you?

The Soldiers Song is the Irish National song being used as a political song at our ground. And I think there are other Irish songs that can be used to celebrate our roots.

The Green Brigade have introduced many songs yet we still revert to the old ones at times.

Im with Neil Lennon on this one.
