Why was another club able to come in and immediately wrap a deal for McGinn when we had a two-month headstart on them? We simply failed to seal the deal because we low-balled the club repeatedly. Had we offered anywhere near £2.7mil, which was a tiny fraction of our budget, in June or July, he'd be ours. Villa missed out on their initial CM target, moved to McGinn, and did business the proper way. Then we came in with one final insult- we could have made better bids all along, just didn't want. Didn't feel it was worth it.

How does anybody possibly blame McGinn, Hibs or Petrie for that? They played it to absolute perfection to do what was best for their club. He was clearly worth significantly more than anything we offered, because they were immediately offered that money by another club.

The McGinn fiasco is something that highlights poor management on the footballing side. And should be spoken about when discussing how we're being run.

Sorry but that’s not correct, his deal was done and dusted when we made our bid.

We * about trying to * Hibs over and out the bid forward to try and save face. So he never chose to go there before Celtic because we never had a bid accepted terms our forward ext.

He went to Villa cause they offered the money, never * them about got him down there agreed terms and got him signed.

Wasn't the first time either. You
can look at Lawells dealing with James McFadden January transfer about 10 years ago. A player Strachan really wanted and helped in his descision to step down. He had played a blinder in cutting wages and a transfer pittance to budget and Lawell just wanted to squeeze even tighter. Lesson not learned and that is bad business. Even further back with Jackie Mac.

Add Fletcher to that as well. Lawwell and the club are famous for ducking about regarding deals.

It would be nice if it was a simple case of Hibs wanting £2.7m, staring that, and us matching it. That’s not how it works in reality. Hibs start with an asking price above the minimum they would accept, and we start with a bid below the maximum we would pay. Everything going well so far.

The issues lies in the paltry increases we offered with each subsequent bid.

Picture the scene - Man Utd enquire about Tierney and we sat we want £25m. They bid £10m and told no. A week later they come back and offer £10.5m. We say no. Another week passes and they offer £11m....you get the idea, at this stage we may well just be ignoring them. We’re not going to budge on our initial valuation until they move much further.

Barcelona then come in and offer £20m. It’s not the £25m target we spoke to Man Utd about, but it’s a price we deem acceptable. Tierney flies to Barcelona, they make it clear they want him and offer him a wage that Man Utd would find difficult to match. The deal that had been drawn out over weeks with Utd was wrapped up in a matter of hours.

I don’t thing anyone would have any complaints about our handling of a similar situation. We played a game of chicken, banking on him being a Tim, his contract expiring, and nobody else being in for him. We lost.

Which again wouldn't be a huge concern if it was a single deal in isolation and an exception to the rule. Almost every one of our transfers turns into a long, protracted saga...even loan deals. Arzani took weeks to confirm.

By contrast Hibs managed to complete a loan deal for Hyndman the same day that McGinn was sold to Aston Villa.

I say again, if Mcginn was keen to play for Celtic then he could have insisted on it. He chose to go to Birmingham, good luck to him

If Celtic were really keen on McGinn playing for us we wouldn't have taken 5 weeks and 4 bids to bridge a negotiation gap of £1.5 million. It hardly screams that we see him as a key part of the future.

McGinn was literally hinting at becoming a hoops player. Celtic didn’t value you him as much as Villa and Celtic had a very big head start before anybody. Lawell (As said above) thought he would rip the bollocks off it and * up again for the sake of spare change. For as shrewd a business man he is, he can be very naive at times when it comes to being on the ball and tuned in. He lets the cat and mouse game of dealing get in the way. * measuring.

I will say again, if Lawwell wanted him here he would have paid the money but he didn’t.

He * Hibs about and only made a bid when the Villa deal was over the line.

Thats the thing that * me off about Lawwell he will fk around like he did with McGinn but then he will gladly have a punt on Kouassi at 3m who hardly anyone had heard of . Its very strange
