Lenny must be on the sniff if he thinks Shankland is a good option.

Some players find their level and have some success at it.

Nicky Clark got over 40 goals one season in the old 2nd Division, moved to 'Rangers' and showed that it was his level. Kenny Deuchar is another back in the day.

For me he reminds me of Scott McDonald who had a knack for being in the right place at the right time and was a great player for us but the game has moved on so much since then.

A McDonald type in our system wouldn't do well. We need guile, pace, trickery, hold-up play. All of which Shankland is badly lacking.

Yeah I was actually going to cite Tommy Coyne in the Juniors, barrel loads of goals for Linlithgow but would be a different story in the senior game.

I understand people's take that he isn't Celtic standard, but I can't comment on his ability as I have never seen him play 90 minutes. So just stats for me.

Think @McGuire is the only on here who has actually mentioned watching him properly over several games. Unless you have to mate?

I've watch a few games on BBC Alba that he's played in and the biggest takeaway for me is that he didn't stand out, even at that level.

I watched Scotland v San Marino and against Russia where I didn't think he looked anything special either.

If he was a Bosman and £5k a week, you could take a punt but for £2 million it's a no from me.

He is a big rangers fan.probably he would be cut off by his Hun family if he joined us. I don't care if your scoring goals in junior or pro level this boy would score shitloads of goals for us. people say like he's playing lower opposition but forget the higher quality of chances Celtic would create for him than Dundee it's would. If he would come to us I would take him.an English mate watched him every week at ayr and he said the boy is the real deal and is going to be a great player.this mate had seen all the greats in top English teams in his life and I believe him.get him in baptise him cleanse him of sevcoitis and he'd be ideal for us even if it for 2 million.weve bought a lot worse for stupid money.only thing is his Hun family though.HH

Aye on alba, the new BBC Scotland channel and BT..

    He's looked * poor everytime..

Last time I watched him for a full 90 minutes was away at Alloa when they lost and let's just say....he looked miles away..

Celtic binned arguably the best left back currently in world football. Who then went and rebuilt a career in low level Scottish football.

I wouldn’t base signing or not signing him on his career 3 or 4 years ago.

I don't think we should be signing Shankland but i can't disagree with what you've said.

It doesn't matter where you're from. All that matters is if you're good enough.

2 and a half years, to be pedantic.

I think the standard in youth players that we and Aberdeen discard will be a long way apart. Loads of players that we deem not good enough go on to have decent careers: Robertson, Irvine, Carey, Wallace, Crainey off the top of my head.

I can't think of a single Aberdeen example.

That's not to say he can't do it and I agree that his recent performances carry far more weight than that fact but I don't think he's anywhere near the level we need.

I think the chances are he'll get a move down South to the Championship, score a few goals and be rated at £10 million but still be nowhere near good enough for us.

May 17 to January 20 is a bit more than 2 and a half if we’re playing that game :93:

Irvine, Crainey and particularly Wallace all played plenty for Celtic. If you’re using that yardstick one of the best wingers in the Premiership currently is an Aberdeen Academy graduate.

Going on a massive tangent anyway and I don’t really have an argument for signing him other than I know of someone that faced him this season who says his movement is exceptional. Apart from that I’ve not seen enough of him.

Crainey and Wallace I'll give you but Jackson Irvine only ever played once for us.

Aye no doubting Fraser has done well in his career but he was a graduate of the academy not a cast-off.

To put it in perspective Aberdeen seen a player in Considine enough to promote him to the youth team and keep him for the last 15 years; but didn't see a player in Shankland.

He's young enough that he could go onto have a decent career but paying £2 million+ for this guy would be a mistake. Going from Édouard to Shankland would be like going from Fillet Steak to spam.

I could have swore Irvine played at least half a dozen times for us? Possibly pre season.

Thankfully Eddy to Shankland won’t be anyone’s intention. A partial Griff to Shankland however....

Might've played in a few pre-season but he only ever made one competitive appearance for us, half-time sub v Hibs.

I'd like to see Griff go out on loan for 6 months to see if he can regain his form before we consider replacing him. Even if we let go of him, I'd like to think we were setting the bar higher than Shankland.

Off on another tangent but when was the last time we brought through a striker from the academy? Beattie?

There's a lot of things that mark the difference between a player at Championship/League 1 level, and a player at the top of Scottish football.

But, for a striker, the real test is in the goals they've scored.

This boys got goals in him, and he'll score them in the top flight of Scottish football imo. I think we'll regret it if we miss out.

This guy isnt European level but it wouldnt surprise me if he continues to bang in the goals against SPL teams when he makes the step up into this league. I can see Sevco making a move for him when Morelas * off.
