If my Maw had a boaby, she'd be ma Da.

What we do know is the only reason we competed at all in Europe that year, was down to Kris Commons.

And who would have been the main proponent of that success?

The guy that scored and assisted nearly all of the goals, I'd imagine.

I'm not trying to say "well if this happened, so could that". I'm saying that the group that season was nowhere near the most difficult we could have drawn.

    It was bang average.

He was, as you say, a vital cog in our midfield.

And we were beyond terrible, saved from absolute disgrace by Kris Commons ability to make something out of nothing.

I didn't deny that. I said earlier that that was by far his best European campaign - and it happened to be in a bang average EL group. He never showed half as much of that in the CL.

He played his part but other midfielders, Brown, Ledley and Wanyama and even Kayal are the ones who did the business.

That Barca game, the last 20 minutes Commons put in one of the best right back displays you'll ever see :56:

    Was hilarious.

My memory is letting me down. All I remember from the last 20 minutes is Tony Watt and Forster:giggle1:

Anyway, enough of this pish. Done this dance a few times now. I just don't rate Commons as much as others.

I think "One of the best of the past 20 years" is a big tag and is always going to make folks minds race.

But when you strip it back, think of us as a team in his time/period at the club, him as a player and what he done - It doesn't sound as harsh.

In his 6 seasons as a starter at the club he has been our top scoring midfielder 4 out of 6 years. Outscored guys like Naka, Petrov, McGeady, Samaras, Thompson, Maloney, Forrest etc. Not to say he's better than any or all of them, but he has been just as important to his respective sides.

He was an important player for his era, a brilliant goal threat especially domestically. When he was scoring 14, 19, 32, 16, 9 goals a season from midfield that's one of our top scorers for 5 years out of 20. Commons, on paper, has been one of our most influential players for 1/4 of this argumentative 20 years.

That said, his time here has been over since Rodgers walked up the Celtic way, and with hindsight, justifiably so.

Was never his greatest fan, possibly because I hated the Lubo comparisons (Lubo was on a different level); but Commons was a good (not decent, good) player for us at every level he played at, right up to CL last-16 (I thought he was our best player by a distance that horrible night against Juve).

He was also a great player domestically and in the EL and obviously never quite reached those heights in the CL; but that doesn't mean he wasn't good at that level.

Here's a man who gets what I'm saying, exactly mate :50:

Well said mate, except I have been one of his biggest fans. As I am with any player who's played a massive part in one of the most dominant periods of our history :50:

Think you're being quite harsh in regards to his CL performances. He was a crucial part of the Last 16 team.

You mentioned that you think Sinclair is vastly superior but you can just as easily point out that he didnt score or assist a goal for us in the CL proper.

I don't think he was a 'good' player for as at CL level, but I agree with the rest.

The Lubo and Naka comparisons are ridiculous though. They were the type of players who done * you couldn't believe and consistently put people on their arses with pure skill.

Don't think anyone is saying Commons is on a par with Amido Balde or Boerrigter, but if you think he's a bit overhyped suddenly you 'resent' him. A good player who'll be remembered.

Nowhere near one of the best of last 20 years though. Especially when you consider Seville was only 14 years ago.

I love him, done us a real good turn and was a steal for the price we got him at.

When he teamed up with stokes and Hooper, my * that was great combo played some football it didn't last long though as stokes would be in an out of the team.

I think history will treat Commons well. He was a top player in the SPL and more than played his part in making us competitive in Europe. At one time he was probably our best player who when out of the team was badly missed. I loved Commons and will remember him fondly. One of the best in the last 20years? Maybe not but definitely in the top 10.
