I can't see many who done much better for us mate, can see more talented players but a midfielder who came in, being on top of the scoring and assist charts, scores a goal to take us into the last 16 in Europe, a consistent Hunskelper, a midfielder who stood up and scored over 30 goals in a season where we lost our best players...

A guy who was always one of the best players in a title winning team, who one season in Europe either scored and set up every goal we were involved in that season bar 1 (a game he wasn't playing)

Had moments like Karagandy, changed it to get us through into the Holy Grail of the Champions League....

Definitely have been more talented players but he's definitely had one of the best Celtic careers over the last 20 years mate. No doubt for me.

Mine too, met him and his Mrs. A few times at poty events, Lenny will no doubt dangle a player/coach role at him, got a feeling he'll come back and haunt us.

And if Sinclair left in the summer I'd be saying Commons had a far better Celtic career than him.

Whether it was derby games, domestic semi finals, finals, close meaningful league games, European qualifiers or European competition group stages (CL and EL) Commons performed and was an integral part of our successes.

My feelings about Commons were summed up in a nutshell when we played Killie away a few seasons ago.

In the first half he had a nightmare, couldn't control the ball, couldn't pass, wasn't making any tackles and was basically utter *. I was screaming for him to be taken off and couldn't believe he wasn't at HT.

In the second half he comes out and scores a hat trick.Having a player that can do that from midfield is a serious asset and I think people are underestimating it.

He was frustrating at times but I would agree with the opinion that he's been one of our best players of the last twenty years.

Lustig is still performing well in the CL 4 seasons later. Ledley was a vital cog in our midfield. Commons, for such an attacking threat domestically, scored 1 goal in 8 games when we got the last 16 - and it was a penalty.

Without looking at the other teams in the EL that season, I'd be astonished if it was the toughest group we could have got. A severely underperforming Fenerbahce. A bang average Ajax side and Molde. The fact that Molde finished first in that group tells you all you need to know about Fener and Ajax. Big clubs, yes. But not very good teams.

Part of the reason I don't rate him as much as many do is because of how frustrating he was. That first half against Killie that you describe was far from a rare occurrence. Yes his scoring record was very good but * me, he was frustrating.

Lazy, slow, greedy...and I lost respect for him after he slated Efe in public and the Deila incident in Molde.

Tottenham and Monaco were in the same group that year. Teams like Liverpool, Napoli and Dortmund were in the group stages that year.

We finished bottom of a group that our team now could comfortable have won 6/6.

Funny enough, I have the exact same story about Nakamura, except it was at Tannadice. That 1st half was his worst performance in a Celtic strip, the 2nd was one of the best :56:

Of course because he was here much longer. That's why I have Lustig ahead of Commons in the "best of the last 20 years" talk. Lustig is still starting for us and playing a big part in our season. Commons had a couple of standout seasons and a couple of pish seasons. And he's not really done anything in about a year and a half.

Well? He's an obvious weak-link and has been for some time.

He did no more than Common, in fact he did less.

Commons wasn't playing as an attacking midfielder in the CL, in fact we as a team didn't see much of the ball. It's no wonder most of our goals came from set-pieces and long balls.

It was. Read some of the comments on the thread on this very site.

Exactly my point mate. Lustig definitely is up there as well, these are the guys that we'll be remembering when we talk about the 10 mate :50:

Joe Ledley was * phenomenal for us in Europe, never seen a player do as good a job as he did on Xavi. Was incredible.

Lustig was absolutely fine in the CL this season. Many were actually saying how well he coped with Neymar at Celtic Park.

Agree to disagree on the Ledley part. For me he remains underrated.

At the time I'm sure many of us did think that the group was a tough one. But after actually playing those teams, it was clear that Ajax and Fenerbahce's teams did not match their reputation.

If we had a better manager and no Ambrose we would have got through to the last 32.

You keep saying that. What did Commons do against top European opposition?

He scored a penalty against Spartak? Right, okay...

Scored against Karagandy? Great goal but Karagandy are hardly the cream of European opposition.
