I think he has aspects of his game that are comparable to those two. I think the 'overweight and immobile' tag is unfairly held against him at times.

For me he's a typical English attacking midfielder, not amazing technically but can hit a great dig and link up well in the final third.

Lubo and Naka had that special something to their games that stood out.

    * love Commons. Give him a game Brendan!

    Isn't he 3 goals off 100?

I think it'll take a few injuries for him to get a game tbh.

Hope he gets some game time. Still can play a part in a long domestic season. He feels like a forgotten man now

He's a better option on the bench than the likes of Armstrong, McGregor or Christie.

    I agree.

Better passer, better vision and has a cracking shot.

Would like to see him get to 100.

He was good in his day, that day has passed ages ago, shouldn't be close to the team unless we have mass injuries. Why don't people get this?

Close but a few more then 3 goals needed. Commons has 91 goals for us in 226 games. A very impressive tally really for an attacking midfielder.

Christie would be better suited to the style Brendan wants to play, he's looked great whenever he's played, McGregor is better deeper anyway. Armstrong yes I agree.

You actually think he's good enough to get in this current team which is the best attacking team we've had in years?

    No he's not.

Christie is a young boy with great potential, the only way he can fulfil this is by playing games. The same goes with Mcgregor, he's much improved in that CM position and needs game time to learn how he can further develop the aspects of his game which aren't great, like imposing himself physically on a game and the defensive side of the game. As for Armstrong, he blows hot and cold but he has a bunch of outstanding attributes, iron out the rough edges in his game and we have a player.

It helps to think of us like a business to understand the logic, we have 3 young players with real potential to get better which in return would improve the team overall. It makes no sense to play a player for pure nostalgic value as he offers no value in return to us. Therefore you play the younger guys over Commons as it is the optimal move.

In a nutshell, playing Commons will hinder of younger players of reaching their full potential.

He was the only player who held his own last year in Europe.

I'd have him in the team before McGregor, Armstrong, Christie etc.

I think that rather than speculate whether he's still got it or not, we should wait until he gets his chance and then we'll see.

Although I agree (and have always thought) that he can't be compared to Lubo and Naka, I think he's done enough over the years to deserve that chance and there is no doubt in my mind that he's still good enough for the SPL (the only question is whether he's still good enough for Europe), so there's almost no risk for us in doing so. With the rotation we'll need to cope with Europe, now is a good time IMO.

Guy is a class act who really gets Celtic, so it will be hard not to feel gutted for him if he gets so close to 100 (as a midfielder!) and doesn't quite make it due to not being played.

No he never :56: scored a goal or 2 but other than that done * all since he was playing on the wing.

He scored 4 and assisted 3.

A contribution that surpassed every other player, despite playing on the wing.

We were awful in Europe last year so that doesnt count for much at all. Also I don't actually remember him being great, just everyone seems to have accepted that as fact cause people say it so much

Different position to McGregor and I'd def have Christie before him since he is the future

More likely because it's borne out by the stats.
