The pain was almost palpable when Kasper Schmeichel went down on his knees during Sunday's match against Portugal.

The dramatic showdown, which both required extra time and shattered World Cup dreams, was also a physical test for the experienced keeper.

The injury occurred in the first half of extra time, but with all substitutions used, national coach Brian Riemer had no choice but to leave Schmeichel on the field.

According to Tipsbladet , it was clear that Schmeichel was struggling with pain, but his determination to continue despite the injury underlines the dedication and fighting spirit he is known for.

After the final whistle, he was taken directly to the hospital for further examinations, which the national coach confirmed shortly after the match.

Tipsbladet reported that Schmeichel was spotted at Lisbon airport with his left arm in a sling and a tired, pained expression on his face.

Nothing has been officially announced yet about the diagnosis, but the photos from the airport suggest that it is not a minor injury.

After the defeat, Denmark has now moved to Group C of the World Cup qualifiers, where Greece, Scotland and Belarus await

The first match will be played on September 5th, and more matches are expected in both October and November.

The big question now is whether Schmeichel will be ready – or whether the national team will have to look towards a new man between the posts.

No further news in the Danish media as to the extent of the injury, quite worrying

    1) financially no I would say. (He's just been given an additional year with us)

    2) id imagine he's looking towards getting to the world cup and bowing out there

What he was looking towards before the injury and what he is looking forward to now may no longer be the same.

Nothing official that he’ll be out for months, so hopefully pure conjecture. Couldn’t handle being one step away from Bain for long. :giggle2:

Financially I doubt he needs the money. I also think if he is out for months he loses his place as first choice. If the injury is bad he may just think * it, he's been to major tournaments anyway.

This is all an ifs and butsthough. We don't know the extent of the injury and he could be back fairly soon.

He shouldn't have played on though, I don't really care if they had no more subs left, it was * stupid.

They've had a higher wage bill for a good few year I'm sure..

It's only dropped this season as they've publicly told everyone they were cutting back. Letting big hitters leave for free. Trying to move on other one's. Signing cheap punts..

Seems it's based on that Danish article that got it simply from seeing him in a sling at the airport.

I reckon he's out for the season at least but there's no point speculating until we find out on Friday

I think we can safely say, a new goalkeeper will be on the menu in the summer.

Really sad news. Hope he don't hang up the boots which is a possibility i reckon at the age he is at.
