I always liked that model btw, 13/14 players of very high quality, a couple journymen and plug the gaps with youth players.

It’s why that team under O’Neill probably blooded in the most youngsters I can remember. Not all had a career with us but most went on to decent ones.

Definitely mate but it let us keep the likes of Henrik kicking about on what was the 4th highest wage in the UK at that point as well as guys like Sutton and Hartson. Maybe just a wee bit more quality as back up but guys like Maloney stepping in or Liam Miller did make their mark.

That's just how it was back then, teams would have a mostly nailed on starting 11 and then a big drop off in quality and youngsters for backup, it's much more of a bigger squad game now, because of higher demands of running and fitness in modern tactics.
