Celtic fans are notorously impatient with younger players. We're having Josh Thompson written off at nineteen, less than a year after signing.

Young players make mistakes, and if we're going to start bringing them through - which we're going to have to do with the ever-tighting financial constraints in Scottish football - we have to accept that they aren't going to be at 100% every time.

 

because if we had a squad full of inconsistent young players we would end up like hibs.what did they win when they had brown,thomson,riordan etc?

 

This is the same Josh Thompson that the Celtic fans were raving about a couple of months ago when he entered the frame ,but after his ex Manager left him brutally exposed the other night now Josh Thompson isnt the same guy he was before ,short memories on here.

 

Probably - he's the next Maldini.

Yip i can agree with that but it was said when he entered the fray that he was doing well and was better than what we had .

 

Thompson seems to be strong in the air, can tackle well and has decent positioning but obviously still learning. He reminds me of McManus with better passing.

 

well i hope he gets better and good enough to be a big player for us.just can't see it really.only time will tell

 

If Celtic fans got behind young players and encourage them they would do better but now it seems that if a player is having a bad game the fans are all over him like a rash ,ending with the player losing confidence and the follow on is more mistakes ,Fans need to be more supportive of the younger players.

 

Still a young lad, lets not forget he has only been involved this year because of the injury crisis in defence, he was bought as a future star, next season would have been his involvment in the first team in a ideal world, I like the lad, think he could be a very promising player for us, yes his pace is a factor but nothing some weeks training on the treadmill couldnt cure, look at Sol Campbell for Arsenal, how old is he, my grandad has more pace than him but has good positional sense so it isnt exposed too often, not comparing him with Thompson but you see my point. He's come in and done a decent job, only going to get better, you dont get trials with Man u if you havent got something, has been shaky in a few games but put in some very good performances (the game at rangers a few weeks ago springs to mind)

 

Correct ,he has got to be given a chance at least and if he cant cut it he will be moved on.

 

exactly.no one says not to give him a chance.and people saying we don't give youth a chance are full of dung.i would prefer a team of players under 25 than an older team.but we are a team that needs to win basically every week and to do that you need experience and consistency

 

Which is why we should have a quality core of players, and then bring through the kids. If it's good enough for Barcelona it's good enough for us. It WAS how we did things right up until the 90s.

Anyway, we're going off in a tangent. The point is that Josh Thompson has been thrown in at the deep end and done very well considering. He is not the finished article and has a long way to go. That requires patience, which the support are clearly lacking in when it comes to youngsters.

 

not to sure about the lad thompson. never before have i seen so many clearances go 2 yards forward and 25 yards in the air
have the boots now days, have turned up toes lol

 

Having Mjallby back is the best thing for him. He could give him the advice and mould him into a similar player. The potential looks there, its just achieving it.

 

ive got to say that i think the boy is showing a lot of potential. imo he is at least as good as mcmanus or caldwell were and they had 6 or 7 years more experience than him. give the boy a couple of years and he will be pushing to be a first choice

john terry, cannavaro and probably a good few other centre backs around who are playing to a high level can do so without an abundance of pace. in fact i don't think many are that quick!! most aren't as speedy as the forwards they play against.
with regards to thomson, the only thing that will stop him becoming a top player is his overall game. if he isnt the fastest then he will have to hone other assets of his game.

and anyway, he isn't that slow for goodness sake.

Saw enough games of him and wont do,Ii think you can watch someone for5/6 games and can see if there is any improvements by then,if they cut out there mistakes,today never got a head clearance all day,wrong side when with players and pace slow,so will need to be moved on or get him to correct his mistakes!!!!
