Get what you're saying but I still think at less than £1m he would've given us value for money, which is more than can be said for the money we spent on Bangura.

Hope to * this is true. Like I said before, given the choice, Russell would 99% sign for us.

Really hope that we get him. Can't see why anyone would be against it. GMS would be very nice too.

Really no fussed if we miss out on Johnny Russell. Anthony Stokes is better than him and we have Tony Watt to develop too. What we need to be looking for is someone to fill Gary Hooper's shoes and Johnny Russell sure as * ain't the man to do that.

Still need a striker regardless though. Even if we kept Hooper, Stokes and Watt. 3 isn't enough. Last year we had Hooper, Stokes, Lassad, Miku and Watt (sometimes Samaras). Next season we'd have Hooper/New Striker, Stokes, Watt and Samaras who is usually a winger. That's nowhere near enough strikers.

Lassad, Miku, Murphy, Bangura, Keatings, McCourt are all likely to go as well as probably Hooper so 7 forward players are going leaving us only Samaras, Stokes, Watt, Forrest and Commons so we'd need 2, its a bonus Russell can play the wings, attacking midfield and striker.

Not sure how others can say we shouldn't sign him. He's a driving force in this league, with something a little different than Stokes, Hooper, etc. Not sure why our main strikers are being brought up when he's a supporting player, more likely to be used out wide or linking up between midfield and attack. His scoring rate doesn't concern me, we'll sign someone else if need be to tackle that problem when it arises.

750k is a steal, as well. Hope Neil is at least attempting to secure him. A tried and tested SPL player of his quality is too good to ignore.

I'd be very happy with Stokes, Watt, a goal-scoring target man, Atajic, and either Russell or someone similar (basically somebody who can play as a forward but also anywhere else north of the halfway line) - with Samaras also capable of playing up there in certain games (particularly Europe).

That'd give us 3 designated, goal-scoring strikers (in Watt, Atajic and the target man), and 3 versatile 'general forwards' (Stokes, Samaras, and Russell/Russell-proxy) who can play pretty much anywhere.

    Pretty much this.

Commons will be 30 this season so isn't the youngest - I see Russel as a perfect backup for him and replacement further down the line.

He's an attacking left winger who floats inside - he's not a target man or a poacher.

He's not even a gamble - cost pennies, still only 23, knows the Scottish game, won't be on massive wages, plus he's a tim so will play with heart.

Russell is much better than GMS, I honestly can't remember a more overrated player than GMS, he does a few tricks but not much elee.

And for a player normally deployed as a second striker Russell's scoring record is pretty good.

Exactly. GMS does all these fancy tricks and flicks and it never gets him anywhere. Russell is much more direct and actually gets stuff done (scores in big games all the time)

:50: always seemed to do well against the huns when they were still around and usually plays well agaiinst us. Obviously that doesn't prove he would do well in Europe but it is a good sign.

But we know he is good. He won't be intended to be our main forward. Scouring Europe is all well and good, but we could easily get another Brozek.

I'd rather have Russell than this "Balde" character.

:50: Like I said earlier, at this price we'd be getting value for the money, the lad can play out wide, behind the front men and as a striker, he's got a bit of skill about him and is a good finisher.....and he's still not the finished article. Give him a few months playing for us....then he would run riot IMO.

No. He's got a medical booked for Monday and it would seem personal terms agreed.

We're to move for him it must be within the next few days.

I don't understand why we didn't put the bid in first as I think Russell is a Tim and would sign no problem but now with us leaving it late , well anything can happen
