CELTIC were last night weighing up a deadline-busting £1million swoop for Dundee United ace Johnny Russell – as Victor Wanyama confirmed he’s staying at Parkhead.
Hoops boss Neil Lennon last night confessed he is preparing for a frantic final day of the January transfer window after his side beat Kilmarnock to go 15 points clear at the top of the SPL. And Record Sport understands a move for Russell is under serious consideration.
The 22-year-old is wanted by Crystal Palace but Celtic could trump the Championship side with a final-day swoop.
With Georgios Samaras going for a scan on an injured hamstring after limping out of last night’s win, Russell is high among the names on the attacking radar.
Celtic boss Lennon said: “We’re toying with the idea of bringing someone in. Players will be thrown at you on the last day and it does get pretty busy.
“You have to digest it and make a decision. Is it good for us? Is it the right position? So we’ll see.”
As the last-day wheeling and dealing gets under way Wanyama has assured fans he’s going nowhere.
The Kenyan and Gary Hooper have been at the centre of interest from a host of clubs around Europe this month.
But while there is likely to be activity in the summer Wanyama made it clear he’ll be at Celtic for the rest of the season.
The 21-year-old said: “I can confirm to you I will be at Celtic. We’re playing well and our Champions League dream is on right now, so I’m looking forward to the big game against Juventus.
“A lot has been said about my intended move but I’ve not given it much thought and even my manager feels I should play until the end of the season for Celtic.
“Then, from that point, the doors can be open for a move.”
Lennon is also adamant he’s keeping Hooper ?after booting out a third bid of around £7m from Norwich City.
He said: “We haven’t put a price on him. If they want to make another bid, fine, they’ll have to come forward with the money and we will see where it takes us.
“We can’t guarantee he will stay but I expect him to. I’d bet on it even though I’m not a betting man.
“But the only concrete offer we’ve had for any player is for Gary from Norwich.
“The next time we’re at Celtic Park, we’re playing Juventus. That really appeals to him.
“He’s ambitious and he wants to further his career, eventually. But ?for now he looks pretty happy to me.”

I don't want to hinder Russell's progression just now. I'd take him at the end of the season.
Plus I'd like him to put a few away for Jackie against the huns -

I know I said it in the transfer deadline day thread earlier, but I would get him in and then send Miku back to Getafe.
He's definitely worth a punt at £1m. -

Apparently Dundee United accepted an offer of £1.5m from Leeds.
-
If Lenny really wanted him, I think we would have moved to sign him before deadline day anyway.
I would like him here, but if United accepted an offer from Leeds, then it looks like he'll be going there. -
If we don't sign him, I hope he stays at Utd so we can at least mount a bid in the summer. Otherwise, it could be another James McCarthy situation when we let someone slip the net. Russell is a very good player and would get us the +20 goals in the SPL in my opinion. Whether or not he can do it in Europe, we won't know until he has been tried and tested.

Leeds got Steve Morison from Norwich in a swap deal for Becchio so i'm not sure if they will bid for Russell also.

I would like to see this move happen, I think if we let him go elsewhere then it could be a chance missed.

Think he would be a useful player, could come here and thrive, but he could also just as easily become a bench warmer.
Great player for UTD in the SPL but could he come here and knock Sammy, Hoops, Stokesy etc off the starting 11 team sheet, and be capable of playing against the big guns in Europe, i'm not so sure.
Would be interesting to find out though, would hate it to become a chance missed :50: -

Don't really want him but wouldn't be dissappointed with him. 1 mill would be decent price for him but we shouldn't be looking to just rape all SPL teams of their best players, we're by far the best team in this league anyway and there's no-one else int eh SPL who will improve our first XI.
Would be funny if we bought him then loaned him back to Utd just for 1 game vs sevco though :56: -
hes supposed to be celtic daft and having a player like that he would run thro brick walls for us if true but doubt it
