The funeral of Celtic legend, John Hughes will take place this Friday, and the cortege will pass Celtic Park following the Requiem Mass.

The Mass will be held at St Mary’s, Calton on Friday, August 12 at 12.30pm, and following the service, the funeral cortege will then make its way to Celtic Park at approximately 1:45pm.

The service will be broadcast on Celtic TV and the club’s official YouTube channel for those who can’t be at Celtic Park on the day but who still want to pay respects to a Hoops hero and a fellow Celtic supporter.

Fans who wish to pay their respects in person are encouraged to arrive at The Celtic Way outside Celtic Park for 1.30pm in time for the cortege passing Paradise.

John’s family have intimated that a fitting tribute would be the wearing of some green to acknowledge John's Celtic connection and lifelong love of the club for those in attendance on Friday.

Big Yogi, who was a star of the golden years of the club in the 1960s and an all-time Celtic great, passed away on Monday, August 1 at the age of 79.

The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Park are with John’s family and friends at this sad time.

 

His son spoke well there. Could see how choked up he was near the end. I take my hat off to people who can do a eulogy at a funeral of a close relative. I wouldn’t stand a chance.

Friday was an emotional day for all those involved at Celtic as the football club said their farewells to a club legend in John ‘Yogi’ Hughes, the Lisbon Lion who sadly passed away last week at 79.

As a player, he scored 189 goals in 416 appearances, but his Requiem Mass at St Mary’s Church in the Calton was a fitting farewell to the man who was Celtic 'til the end.

Sitting in the church alongside friend, family and supporters were Ange Postecoglou and the rest of the Celtic squad.

As the manager took his pre-match press conference for the match against Kilmarnock on Sunday, he spoke about the man and his legacy.

He said: “It was a fitting tribute to one of the legends of this club and it was a nice service and everyone spoke really well.




It’s not just about the footballer, it’s about the man, the father, the grandfather and the great-grandfather, and when you hear about that you understand it’s not just about the footballer.

'We stand on their shoulders and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the likes of John.'

"He was Celtic through and through and it’s important our presence was there with this current group."
