A NOTW story in tomorrows paper..

JOHAN MJALLBY last night insisted Neil Lennon is at Celtic for the long haul.

The Hoops' assistant boss shot down suggestions Lennon could walk away from the club in the summer after security fears led to Celtic giving him a minder.

But after yesterday's 2-0 win over Hamilton opened up an eight-point gap at the top of the table, the Swede said: "He's in a good state of mind. I know the other things that have gone on are unacceptable - even if he's maybe used to it, it still shouldn't happen.

"But he hasn't said to me he's had enough of being here. He's a strong character and as far as I know, he's in the job for the long run. I'd be very surprised if he left. He's focused on improving the team - and himself. He's been in the limelight throughout his career and I think he copes with that part very well.

"I think that pressure is an important factor for him as a manager.

"He wasn't in the technical area today and it was strange not to have him there.

"It didn't change the dynamic much though because he spoke to the players before the game and at half-time.

"He was calm - it was probably a bit strange for him to be up there but maybe he gets a better picture of what happens on the pitch."

Home fans sung in praise of Lennon throughout and Mjallby added: "I'm sure he'll have been happy at the supporters' reaction to him today because he's a hero to them."

Celtic Park chairman John Reid - speaking at the unveiling of a statue of legendary boss Jock Stein yesterday - added: "We've a great manager who's doing a great job and we'll be doing all we can over the next few months to bring the trophies back to the club.

"That's my intention, the players' intention and I'm sure it's what Jock Stein would want."

Mjallby was also quizzed about his own part in Wednesday night's heated Old Firm showdown, when he clashed with Rangers midfiielder Kyle Bartley in the tunnel at half time.

He added: "I don't think I did anything wrong, not at all. There wasn't much in it - it was handbags and it's done and dusted.

"I always remain out to see the players off the pitch so I didn't do anything differently.

"We were all to blame for what happened but that game's done now.

"We put so much into the Old Firm game that we lacked a bit of energy against Hamilton today.

"But we settled after the first goal and we were professional and kept the ball quite well in the second-half." Kris Commons scored both goals yesterday to take his total for the season to five for the Parkhead and 20 over all - including goals he scored at Derby County and for his country.

And he said: "It didn't make too much difference because the manager came in before the game and at half-time.

"I think whether or not he's on the touchline makes a difference is totally down to the individual.

"Maybe psychologically it helps in the bigger games. It's always nice to see him there but I try to make sure I personally contribute and I think I did today.

"I think I'm the top scorer at the club if you take my Derby and Scotland goals into account. I'm aiming for 25 for the season.

"We were flat today. There were tired legs and we weren't as sharp as we were on Wednesday. Hamilton had a game plan, they were hard to break down but I don't think they had a shot on target."

Accies boss Billy Reid added: "We adapted pretty well to it being top against bottom.

"People maybe expected an avalanche of goals but it never looked like being that.

"We had a specific formation designed to stop their full-backs getting in behind us - especially Emilio Izaguirre - and I thought it worked well.

"At half-time I told the players to keep trying to play in the correct manner and that if we kept ourselves in it, the Celtic fans would get frustrated and the players would get frustrated.

"Then we gave away a suicidal second goal. David Elebert's gutted - he did something similar in the first-half and I had a wee go at him at half-time. But Commons put it away expertly."

Celtic expect to have Daniel Majstorovic - who was subbed yesterday with a toe injury - and Gary Hooper, who missed out with a twisted knee, to be fit for next Sunday's Cup game at Inverness.

Big Mjallby Appreciation Thread

Just thinking that the big man doesn't get enough credit! He must have played such a huge part behind the scenes in our success all season, and being second in command to Neil throughout the season with everything going on must have been a difficult job, but he's risen to it superbly. I'm sure he's played no small part in helping our tactics and style of play this season

Great person to be able to call our Assistant Manager, hope he stays for a long time, hail hail Johan! :huddle:

Totally agree with you on this one. Was amazing as a CB for us. Solid as a rock. Not to mention he has supported Neil Lennon throughout this season not just on the touchline. Hail Hail Mjallby

I wonder how much the defensive record this season is down to big johan exrting his presence. He said last season he was going to play with the players and put in hard challenges to toughen them up

Johan was my favourite Celtic player (well joint second next to Paul Lambert). Top guy and a great assisstant manager. Always very composed in interviews and so on. Love the big guy
