Well, more luck than judgement I'd say, some of majs mistakes today were schollboy errors, in fact a slight on schoolboys.

I agree and the ammount of mistakes he made last season made the statistics look good but poor finishing from the opposision and good goal keeping by forester helped there cause but there is no denying that we need far better centre backs than them 2, although loovens is a scapegoat to most on here he has played some good games this season, but maj is shocking, cant believe he gets his game for sweden, a watched him a few months back for them and he was awful

I am seriously doubting Mjallbys role at Celtic. Now let me say Iloved the big guy as a player and no nonsense defender and as a great servant of the club, but we are no nearer getting this * central defence sorted out.
Surely as a CD himself, he must know whats required. We have been tinkering about with this defence for * years.
I thought the big man would have sorted it out when he came in and was pleased when he came in with Lenny and Thommo, but thats 2 seasons now and we are still * ourselves when any team punts the ball up towards our goal.Granted.their have been injuries galore, but Iwould say apart from Rogne they are all *.The amount of goals we have conceded due to bad defensive play is unbelievable. We desperately need this position sorted once and for all before we begin our european campaign

Rogne and Mulgrew will not be sufficient in Europe imo

I think Rogne and Mulgrew are better than McManus and Caldwell to be fair and they done not bad.

I'd want Wanyama or Kayal protecting them in the harder games but I wouldn't mind them going in to a match.

I would want a Bobo Balde type in there though.

I have to say I too am a bit worried as I think up against the toughest opposition they will get seriously found out as neither have massive pace and against a top team we might get sliced open on the counter, but i'm willing to (and want to) give them at least both a chance first.

I don't think we could afford to bring in anyone much better than either of them anyway.

I agree it seems weird that Mjallby, being so good and experienced, hasn't sorted out of defensive problems but most of our problems were caused by individual numpties like Cha or Majstorovic, when we've had a settled back line of Izzy Mulgrew Rogne Matthews we've hardly been troubled.

I'm not sure if they are better tbh. I think they could be bullied far easier

We'll see how "fine" we really are in the CL qualifiers.

We need to add more and more experienced defenders. There's no question.

    Especially Centre halfs.

I agree.Rogne is injury prone Hope we can persuade Loovens to hang around, and bring in another quality centre back.We also need another right back and left back IMO.

Mulgrew is as good a ball playing centre half as there is in Europe...

    Seriously though, ridiculous OP.

    Matthews Rogne Mulgrew Izzy

is completely fine. There are other areas we need to be concentrating on.

    Loovens is offski

Regardless of stats this season, these guys aren't good enough to be our starting partnership at Celtic....especially in Europe. I like them but I'm a realist

The defence last season kept more clean sheets than in any other year since the SPL began - indeed, the only Celtic side that registered more league shut-outs than last season was a century ago (1913-14). So, now with Maj & Loovens moved on there is room to bring in another CB to compliment Rogne & Mulgrew, backed up by Wilson (who admittedly was pretty inconsistent).

We have certainlyt tightened up at the back significantly since Mowbray's departure & now have a base that even if players are moved in & out of the side, remains pretty tough to break down. All of this points out that there has been significant improvement in the defence.

Even last year, in the aftermath of the poor form in Sept & Oct, the catalyst of the improvement was the tightening up of the defence. It was the defence that got sorted out first. Once this had been tightened up, then the MF & attack seemed to start clicking into gear.

This to me suggests that the big Swede has been doing his work on the training pitch & the proof of it is there is the stats. Johan has my confidence & support 100%.
