Id class Kanye West as more of a pop singer than a rapper. I do like him though and several of his songs like Runaway, All of the Lights, Gold Digger and Goodlife but I see them as good pop songs with little to no depth to them.

Kendrick Lamar is a good rapper but I think he's yet to make a classic rap song with good depth/feeling to it.

All they songs are mainstream Kanye songs though, his albums are impeccable. Although I'd say hes a better producer than rapper, probably one of the best ever.

And Kendricks probably the best rapper the now, every song has depth and a story. Also raps about money, clothes cars, drugs, gangs, religion, history, social struggles and everything in between. For me hes the mainstream rapper with the most depth in his rhymes.

He is a great producer, think more pop sounding songs though. Dr Dre and RZA I think produce better rap songs with better beats.

What would you say are Kendricks strongest 1/2/3 songs with good depth/meaning to them?

Dre was good for his time, the g-funk/gangsta era but hes fell off now hardly heara thing from him. RZA is a good producer tough.

    For Kendricks songs with most depth I'd say imo;

Art of peer pressure - Basically about him being a good kid till hes with his homies n what they get upto.

Ronald Regan Era - A song about him growing up in the 80's and early 90's and how Regan * up a generation.

Maad City - Basically a story about Compton and what it was like growing up there.

Sing About Me - Kendrick wants to make sure hes the best so that when he dies people will sing about him for years to come.

Poe Mans Dreams - A song about prostitution and the effects it has.

Could go on but they ones stand out for me, after a few listens you pick up the message hes trying to put across.

Also bear in mind I haven't really listened to his right old stuff but from his newer albums that's the ones that stand out for me. Not my favourite tunes off the albums either.

Edit - My favourite Kendrick verse is probably the Control verse, just for the sheer passion in his voice when hes calling out his peers to step their games up or hes gonna leave them in the dirt.

Art of peer pressure and Sing about me are good songs but kinda flat, they feel like he's reading a poem. Maad City is my favourite song of his, again a good song but I dont really get any feeling from it, the other two you mentioned I dont like that much.

That's the way its kinda intended to sound a think. Fair play mate everybodys tastes are different. Maad Citys a class tune, its all down to how you perceive whats hes saying a suppose, when the second part kicks in when its up full pelt it gives me gooesbumps man.

    Aye, everyone likes different stuff.

I just feel like nowadays rap music doesn't sound as good as it used to. Early 90s to early 2000s rap there was a lot of variety and quality NWA, Wu Tang, KRS One, Tupac, Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Big L, Big Pun, DMX, Eminem and Scarface, obviously others but i'd say they're my favourite of that time, in the 2000s especially mid 2000s forward I think it lost the kind of feeling/sound it used to and is a different style of music now.

Aye, totally agree bud. It was all about who the hardest * was basically, who sold the most crack and had the most guns lol. Now its all wee jessys that probabaly never seen a gun in their lives trying to kid on.

IMO it was jay-z in the early 2000's that changed it all and it started heading the way it is now. Most * now are pure pony and I wouldn't bother my * listening to them, still probably listen to more pre 2003 stuff than I do recent stuff.

Big L, Tupac, Biggie, Wu Tang, Eminems early stuff got me hooked on rap when I was a wain cos my uncle was a mad toker and right into it and av listened to it ever since. We would be sitting lacoste trackie'd up, aww ma mates listening to the MC stompin carry on n ad just listen to Tupac and Big L, must thought a was a mad creep for no following the pack:smiley-laughing002:.

That's no what I said though is it? Rap music back then was about being a gangster, selling crack, shooting * and everything else that came with the struggle. If that's no about being hard then what is?

Now all you hear about is wee rich fannys wae nice jewellery, dear champagne, fast motors drinking co-diene * and talking utter garbage.

Theres still good rappers out there obviously but they get disregarded cos they don't rap about that content.

Disregarded by who though? People who think rap should stick to its early 90s stereotype of gross misogyny and killing *? It's the exact same tired argument as those that think Queen and Led Zeppelin are the pinnacle of rock music, just a different genre. If you're not finding good music you're not looking hard enough. It's one thing to say "I prefer the music from..." it's another to say "most * now are pure pony".

Its true though most rappers now are *, if you look back at what I've said I never said I couldn't find good music though. Infact I was directing another poster to some recent good rap music. I never once said rap should stick to anything either.

As I said everybodys tastes are different. If some one prefers 90's rap to todays rap whats the big deal?

And to answer your 1st question, its disregarded by the majority of people, those who don't take time to actually look into a bit of history of the genre.
