was always impressed with the way he played for hearts. if he could score as many goals for us then i would be delighted. how many goals did our central mid players score last season?
know how much you love scotland and how touchy you are about it but i just dont think hartley is a particularly good holding midfield player

I must admit that I would have loved to have see a peak box to box (a la Hearts 3-4 seasons back) Hartley in the hoops. He was immense. It is an interesting point as to why he didnt play that role when he first arrived and Lenny was still here Still wonder if Harley had been given the box to box role with a sitter behind him if he could have done his Hearts role for us. Think now its too late and he doesnt have the legs. Great pity though. We maybe signed him just as the legs went.

he played in a team with stan petrov who scored more than his fair share.
lennon was never capable of scoring anyway.
hartley has proved that he is.
i think we need a central midfield player who can score on a regular basis

hartley is * i hope strachan can see it soon or our midfield is in trouble he can be a squad player but never good enough especially against european teams they would run right past him. hope he picks up a knock and puts himself out of contention

Name me one player in our current squad who is able to perform in that role and do it consistently well? We've tried so many different combinations in the middle of the park it's unreal and none of them worked until Hartley and Robson were paired up. How you can't see that is beyond me, it honestly is.

Hartley isn't able to play box-box anymore and I agree he's not as quick as he was and yes he makes mistakes but again, he played that holding/spoiling role at a time when our CM were nothing short of a disgrace and when undue pressure was being put on our back four because of that.

I still state that he deserves a lot of credit for playing the way he did in that role, but I know a lot of you will not agree as is your right.

I agree with everything people say about hartley being *. on top of that i tihnk mcgeady is * too. useless, overated bag of *. lets not even get started on that * in goals. Boris is it?? the man is the most useless keeper we've had in recent memory. put the * on a free transfer. *, the best we'd probably manage is actually giving other clubs money to take him off our hands. completely jeperodised our season on numerous occasions. Mind the spartak penalty shoot out!! All those penalties he failed to save!! * USELESS!!!!!!!!!

Have I just seen a thread saying Paul Hartley shouldn't be here?? FFS, he's the only man here who can kill a game expertly!!! Old Neil taught him well. People here say we need top class DM-s. We missed our chances, and we all know Lawwell and WGS don't like to spend much... Hartley may not have top class, but he's got first rate guts. The team needs to have creative players, but there needs to be a midfield murderer as well.

i think your problem is seeing the diffrence in a DM and AM and just bunch them all up as CM's tbh. have a list:
    hartley is a DM
    Sno is a DM
    Donati is a DM
    S.Brown is an AM
    Robson is an AM
    tommy G - he's a nutter.

now - a DM (defensive midfielder) is the midfield defensive player, he can be found in the middle of the park controling the passing in the game picking out passes for the wingers and attacking mids, the only real time you'll see a DM near the other teams penalty box is at a corner. your more likly to find him in our penalty box helping out the defenders and tracking back to cover.
a DM's job is a thankless one because they apear to always have a quiet game but he is very much a KEY member , if not THEE key member to a team. A DM is usually an experienced player, composed and with great team working skills and leadership aswell as being a good tackler etc. because of that its hard to find an exellent young DM as experience is vital.

i hope you now understand the defensive midfielder roll a little better and perhalps see why hartley isn't the goal scorer he was at hearts.
just because he lines up in the same place in the team sheet dosn't mean he's in the same position.

if your still expecting 10+ goals a season from a DM then a just don't know what to say.

Hartleys partnership with Robson was the reason we won the league. Good player i like him. Maybe we dont need to use him in some games at home in the SPL but against the huns and in Europe he's vital.

it's unbelievable how Celtic "supporters" come on to this forum and puke up this utter pish that they, more often than not, have just heard some other jakie spit out. I hate to break it to you, but half of the punters that go to Parkhead every week know * all about football (trust me...I'm there week in, week out) but it's not just Celtic, the huns are even worse, but that's besides the point. Strachan and the players have won the league that last three years in a row, scaled unprecedented heights in the CL, upset all the odds, and have done it with half of the * support they deserve!! Financially, let the truth be known, Celtic cannot compete with the money that is being made available to teams in the Premiership, and I crack up when I hear English football supporters complain about Abramovich spending "stupid" money. What Celtic do have though is a rich history, a world-wide brand, CL potential, and thousands of loyal supporters united by our common cause. At the end of the day, Celtic is more than a football club and that's why I'd much rather be a tim than support any of those mickey-mouse clubs down in England. Hartley might not be the most talented player in the world, but he is asked to do a certain job for Celtic and in my opinion he and Robson were excellent in wrapping up the title last year. So ffs get behind them and have a bit of * pride.
