I'm something of a recent convert to comics,
I started reading Punisher MAX back in 2010 but left it there and I've only recently picked up alot more through digital downloads and I'm now hooked, you can read 1000's of them on a tablet (until now i thought tablets were a bit pointless)
I've mostly stuck to mature ones that are dark but I'd be open to more PG ones if people recommend them, Garth Ennis is probably my favourite writer.
One's I'd recommend are
==========================
Transmetropolitan
Set in the future the main character is spider Jerusalem a mental case journalist, its the funniest one I've read and my favourite beside Punisher Max.
==========================
Crossed
Sickest comic I've ever read and probably ever made, imagine the walking dead but instead of people turning into zombies they turn into maniacs that do the worst thing theyre minds can think of, its not for the faint of heart.
==========================
Preacher
Probably the most popular in recent times (currently being made into an AMC series) follows a preacher possessed by a spirit who is the product on a devil and an angel which makes it more powerful than *, theres an Irish vampire in it too.
==========================
The Boys
Set in a world where superheroes exist but are generally drug addicted * crazy * who kill tons of cilivians through collateral the boys are a unit set up to keep them in order and kill them if neccesary, its very good and the main characters from Glasgow.

Always been wanting to get into them but it's not happened. Read the first 4 volumes of The Walking Dead, had volume 5 for about a year and just haven't looked at it yet.
Like the OP, as much as I love superheroes, I reckon I'd prefer reading more gritty and mature comics/graphic novels. Although I do want to read some Daredevil and Punisher comics.
Preacher and The Boys are two I've heard are excellent, might give them a go. -
Not sure if anyone's interested, but I found a couple of sites a while back that posts comics entirely online for free. They have all the new releases and quite a big collection of the older stuff as well. There's no downloads or anything like that either, just in case anyone's not fond of that. It uploads pretty much everything from Marvel & DC and most, if not all, of the stuff from the smaller publishers (Image, Dark Horse etc).
I had a quick look for some of the stuff mentioned here, and between them they've got pretty much everything listed here. In the case of stuff like The Walking Dead they've posted every issue up until the latest release last week.
If anyone's interested just say and I'll message you the links. I'd post them here but the sites ask that you don't, as it's apparently caused problems for them in the past. -

After finishing Daredevil I'm tempted more than ever to read some Daredevil and Punisher comics. -
His ongoing series at the moment by Mark Waid is supposedly one of the best comics out there as well. Both sites have the second volume which was part of a mini-relaunch by Marvel where a bunch of series started at issue 1 again, but for some reason neither has uploaded the first volume which the current series is a continuation of.
In regards to the Punisher, just stick with the Punisher MAX series. It's not canon, but it's regarded as best Punisher series out there. You could skip the last 12 or so issues as they're not by the same writer (and are really poor). -

Actually is there a comic book place in Dublin? -
Apologies for not replying sooner, but thats me sent you the PM with the details.
I'm not from Dublin, but I'd be suprised if there wasn't a small comic shop of sorts; Google would probably be your best bet for answering that question though. I know most large bookshops usually sell collected editions of popular series, so that's probably an alternative option.
