We have Tonev and Wakaso back soon. If we bought him now we need to return at least one of them.

Celtic eye pre-contract deal for Gary Mackay-Steven

Celtic are trying to sign Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven for free on a pre-contract agreement.

The Tannadice club have been informed that Celtic are unwilling to pay a fee for the 24-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer.

United have said it will take a minimum of £250,000 to prise the player from Tayside in the January transfer window.

Celtic notified United of their plan to speak to Mackay-Steven and negotiations are believed to be under way.

Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough tabled what was his club's third bid after watching the winger score in United's 3-2 win over Hamilton Accies at New Douglas Park on Monday.

However, it is understood that Mackay-Steven is not keen on playing in League One in England.

On Wednesday a United spokesman told BBC Scotland: "We do not need to sell him and if anyone wants him at this stage they will have to put up or shut up."

Celtic assistant manager John Collins has said it would be "inappropriate" to discuss a player at another club but did acknowledge that MacKay-Steven is a "good footballer, he's got pace and skill" before adding: "We are looking for speed and width at the top end of the pitch".

But Mackay-Steven recently revealed that he expects to stay with Jackie McNamara's side until the end of his current contract.

The winger, who has earned one cap for Scotland, moved to United in 2011 from Airdrie United and has scored 27 goals for the Taysiders.

He has found the net five times in 22 appearances this season as United lie third in the Scottish Premiership table, five points behind leaders Aberdeen.

    *******

I have put in bold the bit i find interesting. So apparently we don't want to pay £250k now? * shocking.

    Might, maybe, could.

At the end of the day when he's signed his pre-contract he will be a Celtic player for all intents and purposes. I reckon we'll pay a nominal fee in the last couple of days of the Window to take him slightly early.

Dundee United get some money, we get the player and the player isn't left in a semblance of limbo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can sign a pre contract first then later still be signed with a fee early by that club (us) if dundee united were to accept?

If that's the case the club are being clever, get him signed on a contract first so we've got him guaranteed then a bid over the next week of say 150 to get him in now as he'll be unsettled..

It is telling if the reports are true that he doesn't want to play in league 1 with our direct competition, I'm taking that that he's set on coming here..

You're right yea, we secure him and then play hardball with Utd with them knowing no-one else can offer a fee for him.

Yes. We can't afford McGeady's wages though.

It might seem tight due to the low fee but it's quite clever to be fair..

Might, maybe, could just might be good enough for Utd to say they are willing to keep hold of him until the summer, unless we pay the 250k asking price. After their deals in recent times, I wouldn't imagine they will be absolutely desperate for an extra 100-150k. Not when they are still challenging for trophies this season, and second place in the league, which if they have any aspirations in succeeding with, then Mackay-Steven will be crucial for them. If we don't get him in before the end of the window, for the sake of 250k, then I would be pretty disappointed in all honesty.

It's a bit of both... On the one hand Im thinking well done he would have went for penny's to a championship side and maybe signing s pre contract will make United put the 250 k price down more and take what we offer them probably 100k

On the other hand if we do wait to get him for free it's slightly embarrassing as *! The guy would start right away we need the team improved and a winger ! We are tight as * honestly

You say 250k as if it is nothing.

250k is 5% of Dundee United's entire Annual turnover. Celtic have every right to refuse to pay it.

What is it compared with our turnover though? It's relative peanuts to us, and it's is trying to sign him after all. If we fail to sign him this window because we are squabbling over 100k or so, then it is pathetic in my opinion.

What happens if, say, Wolves offer £250k now? Are we really going to let that type of talent go for the sake of 10% of what we paid for Pukki?

A pre-contract suits Dundee Utd if no one is going to pay a faur amount. A pre-contract does nothing for us this season.

£10 million for Forster, £1.25million for Tony Watt, spent £2million.

Don't be ludicrous and expect us to spend £250,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!
