Reply in white below, as their may be a spoiler or two

They are the children of the forest, the race that lived in Westeros even before the First Men and have basically kept the Others in check forever, but now there are hardly any of them. The old guy is their leader/prophet and is sitting in the tree like that as he uses it to view the world through the heart trees.

Bran's story doesn't do much for me. Now that he's reached the tree his story should move forward a bit. Couldn't care less for the Reed's, wasn't bothered with what happened during that episode.

I watched Thronecast today and they mention George RR Martins Novellas :87:

So I googled them and they are called Tales of Dunk & Egg. There is three of them and they are set 90 years before the first book.

Has anyone read these? Are they worth reading before I start the books?

Never read them but, I might be wrong here, I think GRRM said they were considering doing a spin off TV show based on those stories.

I'm in the middle of the second book so I haven't got to that point yet in the books but I much prefer how the books did Tyrion killing Tywin. In the book
before he frees him Jaime tells Tyrion that his first wife, who he always believed to be a * paid to marry him, was actually just a low born farmer's girl who was genuinely in love with him and Tywin had several men rape her in front of Tyrion. This makes him going up to get his revenge (instead of just leaving) make a lot more sense, and also affects Tyrion and Jaime's relationship because Tyrion retorts to the story by telling Jaime that he did kill Joffrey and that Cersei's been cheating on him all over the place. Oh yeah and in the book he kills Shae out of anger not self defence. One of the few "creative decisions" that really backfired. They shouldn't water his character down just to make him the hero of the story or anything like that.

i dont quite get how they have made more of a hero of him in the show. his reasons in the book for killing both of them actually make the killing of them more understandable, so if anything they have vilified him more in the show. plus as you know
shae was a far less sympathetic character in the books, so killing her was far more justified as she had been using tyrion from the start. in the show, she was more of a woman who had been hurt by the person she loved so it was harder to justify him killing her....even in self-defence. there was a moment where he easily could have stopped but didnt, which is why he said sorry afterwards
