Interesting discussion about conflict between the show's writers and GRRM from another forum

They've been dancing around this for a while, but it seems like the game of chicken between GRRM and D&D over the completion of the series has finally begun in earnest with this piece in EW[1] .
First of all, both parties have the same ideal. The best-case scenario for everyone is that GRRM stays slightly ahead of the series, including with the final book. But GRRM's interest is buying himself as much time as possible to finish his masterwork. And D&D's interest is the success of the show. Their comments in the EW article should be read understanding that their interests are now at odds and that they are now engaged in a negotiation -- or a game of chicken.
GRRM's negotiating position is that the show should take its time and that he won't be rushed. That it should spend as much time on AFFC/ADWD as possible. That it should potentially take a hiatus or do a prequel year. And that there could be an acrimonious falling-out if they choose not to do so:
“I think the odds against that happening are very long,” Martin says when asked about the show catching up to his novels. “I still have a lead of several gigantic books. If they include everything in the books, I don’t think they’re going to catch up with me. If they do, we’ll have some interesting discussions.”
...Martin points to Starz’ Spartacus, which interrupted its main storyline with a prequel season.
...Martin has told the showrunners his top-secret end-game plan for Ice and Fire, but wouldn’t be thrilled with the TV series progressing into that territory before he published his books. “I don’t think I’d be happy with that,” the author says.
...Martin sounds pretty confident the saga will finish with the seventh book, though he still leaves open the possibility of an eighth. “I have a story to tell; the number of books is almost irrelevant,” he says. “I’ll do that in as many books as required. I’m still projecting it as seven.”
However, Benioff and Weiss are trying to signal to GRRM that he'd better hurry up. That they want to work with him, they want to be reasonable, but that there's no * way they're spending 3 seasons on AFFC/ADWD (as GRRM has publicly suggested), and that if he doesn't finish the books in time they will go ahead without him:
"There is a ticking clock here,” says writer-executive producer David Benioff... “The series has already reached a point where there are so many characters, particularly in season three we’re introducing so many new ones, we run the risk of bursting at the seams as we try to cram every single subplot and all the various characters and it becomes impossible on a budgetary level and it becomes impossible on an episode-basis to jump around every few minutes to 30 different characters and locations. We don’t want to do that, and recognize that as a real risk and we will take steps not to fall into that trap.”
...“We can’t wait too long because of the kids,” Benioff says. “Issac’s [Hempsted Wright] voice is changing. Everyone is getting bigger. We have this wonderful cast, but we don’t have an infinite amount of time … We don’t want to become a show that outstays its welcome and tries to turn each book into three seasons. Part of what we love about these books and the show is this sense of momentum and building toward something. If we tried to turn this into a 10-season show we’d strangle the golden goose.”
… “We still have our fingers crossed that George will get there,” Weiss says. “That’s what’s best for us, it’s what’s best for the fans. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” Adds Benioff: “Ideally the books come out first.”
The stakes are high. Hundreds of millions of dollars for HBO and the popularity of the show vs. GRRM's legacy and desire to complete the series at his own pace. Ideally, D&D's threat will incentivize GRRM to write just fast enough to stay slightly ahead of the show, and that he will be able to do so. I certainly hope it works out this way. But a game of chicken can potentially end very messily.

Ending was abit meh, i mean weve seen a few too many episodes ending with dany standing in or amongst a crowd with her dragons flying about, shouldnt have ended with that scene imo but its no big deal. Tyrion and tywins segments are pure gold.

just started watching this. I'm on season 2 and about 200 pages into the first book too. Far better than i thought it would be and I can't believe I nearly missed out on this!
