This is what it also is built upon in the movie, the lower leagues, with teams such as Yeovil and Tranmere mentioned. I can't remember what 'firm' that the characters in Football Factory were attached to (one of the London clubs... Milwall, or Chelsea or something?), but hadn't heard of anything in the news etc, so was curious if it was still a thing or just that the movie is out of touch etc.

I think anti social behavior relating to football is clearly an issue but probably isn't the same as the old football hooligan tribes. I think the English Premier league has become a corporate day out, but there may be more going on in lower leagues. Even then I suspect it's probably no worse than a regular Saturday night out in some of these towns.

There was a recent podcast I listened to which was about the relationship between football firms, the far right, and the riots we saw in England last year. Basically argued the old football firm culture was still there but buried deeper, was mostly online, and any trouble was kept away from football grounds. Can't remember what it was called but will dig it out if you're interested (I found the idea more interesting than the actual podcast)

Loved ‘The Football Factory’ remember reading the first couple of pages of the book not long after the film came out but never got round to buying it.Sure Marching Powder is intended as a sequel of sorts.I’ve got some books about hooligans and most of them are just guys getting nostialgic and boasting about how they chased/battered everyone. One of the better ones was ‘Kicking Off: Why hooliganism and racism are killing football’ by Dougie Brimson.

Channel 4 done a good wee series fairly recently about how matches are policed in England really worth a watch.

I think in Scotland it’s a more ‘ultra’ orientated culture now,but there’s still violence that goes along with it as seen with GB vs Santa Hats Falkirk/Dunfermline Morton/Patrick Thistle and Thistle vs a few others etc it takes two minutes to find videos of then clashing and invading ends like the old days - but they’re just all mostly dressed in black and not wearing the traditional casual gear - stupid wee Pringle jumpers etc.

Marching powder was the 20 year sequel to FF. Wee fun fact, I was in it as an extra.....and had pals with bigger parts in it..

As for the scene in general. Used to love it..

    That’s cool :50:

Remember the pirate copies from The Football Factory? It had a completely different soundtrack…was * amazing actually! They must have got copyrighted to * or something before the release? No harm to the version we got but I felt it made certain scenes in the film better..the opening in particular…plus liked the bit with the reporter they got rid of lol.

Vaguely think I've seen that before :giggle1:

That film is fairly close to how it was. No surprise really when you've got people directing it who know the apple..

Some of them that have been out have been laughably bad..

And the scene overall is practically dead now by and large..

Don't think it's as much of a thing now.

I had a bit of a fascination with it years ago. I liked the clothing culture that came with it, used to wear a lot of Ellesse, Fila, Fred Perry, Sergio Tachini, had about 50 pair of Adidas gutties too. I used to watch the below, often. Used to be on Amazon.

However the idea of arranging fights to me is a bit mental. I can perhaps see the allure in terms of the culture. E.g. if you're a young guy from a working class background in 1980s Britain, getting on the train with your mates wearing your one and only track top that you'd saved up to buy, singing songs, having a small scrap and sharing stories, then back to your local pub. I get it. Especially if there wasn't much else to do. You could see how someone could get caught up in it. Feeling part of something for once.

Bringing knives, any sort of weapon tho and going with the intent to actually kill someone else...nah.

I think the introduction of CCTV kinda * it a bit as well. Nowhere to hide for anyone, now.

Grew up with it in the 90s. Remember being in scary situations and getting attacked by Hibs casuals at that daft bridge, guy got his nose broke. and bus ambushed at Aberdeen when I was a wee boy.

Remember going to Edinburgh for a meal with my mum and dad and my sister sometime mid 90s. Italian restaurant on Leith Walk and Hibs were playing Hearts at Easter Road. Chaos all around. Casuals all around us shouting and throwing bottles. Fighting everywhere and my mum just screaming. She blamed my da for not knowing that game was on that day.

Still not as scary as Duke Street 1999 after the 'dallas got hit by a coin' game. That's the most scared I think I've ever been. Blood pishing out of the heads of old men that got hit by bottles. People taking serious kick ins and not enough polis to stop it. A Pakistani guy got leathered for trying to protect his shop. A guy even got shot with a crossbow in the chip shop.
That wasn't casuals. It was hooligans. It was insane and I still get scared thinking about it
