Celtic striker Scott McDonald has claimed Aiden McGeady could soon become the target of multi-million pound bids from the biggest clubs in Europe following the winger's stunning performance against Benfica.
Ireland international McGeady, 21, made a mockery of the Portuguese opposition at times, jinking past players and making the opposition look more like a pub team than one genuinely capable of doing much damage in Europe.
However, it is inevitable that such an assured performance - which was capped with the only goal of the game - will attract attention of clubs looking for players who can unhinge a team in a matter of seconds.
McDonald, who has impressed since moving from Motherwell in the summer, is convinced that if Aiden scores a few more goals, he will quickly be out of the price range of all but the richest clubs on the planet.
McDonald was quoted in the Evening Times as saying: "He moves the whole team 40 or 50 yards up the field with his surging runs. To have that in your team is beautiful.
"If he can now start to add goals to his all-round game, then I think all sorts of big clubs will start taking an interest in him. To be honest, they probably already are.
"But if he starts to score more goals then his price tag will just keep going up and up. He will certainly cost too much for most clubs."
Hopefully Aiden's recent form will continue as he has been frustrating at times in the past. However, comments before the Benfica game where he said he was now more focussed on advancing the ball than performing tricks suggest things are moving in the right direction.
Motivation is also a key issue - it's easy to get 'up' for a game in the Champions League, but against the likes of St Mirren and Gretna, things are very different. A McGeady on the form he was against Benfica would destroy those two sides - and that sort of performance would be much appreciated domestically.

aidens just played the game of his life. he's been so inconsistent up to the last few weeks the guy would make you want to set fire to yer eyes. he now needs to take this great vein of form and make a career out of it.
i for one wish him well.... i'm sure we all do. i want a performance like that every week though. -

Don't think getting motivated has been his problem, far from it. This week is probably this first time McGeady has performed in Europe.

well as he has been palying quite good up to latl it would of been surprising if he dropped it for the benfica game. Sometimes aswel the SPl games will be harder for players like mcgeady as it is more challenging phsically and they are always closing down and doubling up on him

Think we all need to calm down!
Don't get me wrong Aidan had a great game the other night but id hate it if every one builds him up then knocks him back down the first time ha has a bad game. I mean we played the Huns not long ago and he wasnt even in the first 11. It wasnt that long ago when ppl on this site had threads slagging the boy off... My point is lets take it one game at a time don't put loads of pressure on him hes still young and he will get better. -

He is far too inconsistent.
Big clubs would be stupid to want to buy him based on one game.
A few years, and he could be special, but I want him to be special for Celtic. -

I was more impressed with the form that he showed the first half of last year where he was our best player although he appears to have hit a decent patch over the past month. He becomes a good player when he can maintai that type of form for 75% of the time. Any player can turn it on occasionally (did anyone notice Peter Lovingthepants coming on against Chelsea for Shalke and ripping them to shreads), but if McGeady can add consistency and goals to his obvious skill then we will have a quality player in our team.
As other people have said, once again we have people coming on this forum saying he is amazing when a month ago they said he should be dropped (a month ago i said he would have been dropped if we had someone decent to replace him). -

Personally, I think Mcdonald and Scot Brown are the two most at risk from big transfer offers, I reckon if McGeady left he would probably be back at some point but the 2 Scots must be attracting Premiership attention, Brown I beleive will be world class within 3 yrs

The boy still has a good 4-10 years to become truly world class. Give him time.

There's never been any doubt he had the ability as he had showed it in flashes but the turn around in the mental aspect of his game has been quite frightening. He's making the right decision most of the time just now, long may it continue. I personally think the pressure he's recieving is a help rather than a hindrance, all the best players thrive on being the main man the Larssons and Ronaldos of this world.
