CHRISTMAS 2016 will be a festive season of ‘firsts’ for Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko as he prepares to spend his first yuletide in Glasgow, and bring in his first Christmas and New Year as a dad.

The Hoops star – a Danish internationalist of Ukrainian decent – will celebrate December 25 with his partner Anne and their son, William, together for first time but he’ll also enjoy a string of special gatherings that acknowledge his cultural heritage.

For followers of the Russian Orthodox Church that the Sviatchenko family identify with, New Year’s Eve is the big day in the family, which is funny as there are a few Celtic fans who will be looking for cause to celebrate on December 31 this year as well!

Christmas Eve also takes precedence in his native Denmark, so there will be food and festivities all round for the Sviatchenko family once the Celtic defender returns home from the champions’ visit to Hamilton Accies earlier that day, giving him a full week of celebrations to look forward to at the end of the month.

“My family is from Ukraine and the Church calendar is somewhat different,” the 25-year-old explained to the Celtic View in an exclusive interview for the Christmas edition. “We’re Russian Orthodox so that’s why it’s a bit different.

“We celebrate New Year’s Eve more than we celebrate the 24th or the 25th. In Denmark the big day is the 24th so we’ve been in Denmark for so many years that we celebrate Christmas Eve as well and always have been eating all the Danish food, but with a touch of Ukrainian tradition to it.

“In Denmark it’s typical to have rice pudding for dessert but we always do different things and I’ve always liked that. It’s a bit of an alternative Christmas and this year is actually my first Christmas not with my parents because we’ll be in Glasgow. Anne’s parents are coming over and her brother is as well, so we will be in Glasgow and my parents will be with my brother and their family. Next year my parents are coming over and that’s when we’ll be together.”

With such a varied cultural background, Sviatchenko is essentially getting three bites at the Christmas cherry.

“We normally eat duck or goose but I’ve not checked for either in Glasgow yet,” he added. “I think I’ll need to get that soon, though!

“With that we have potatoes which we cover in sugar and it caramelizes so it’s really tasty and sweet – that’s a traditional Danish dish. We’ll have red cabbage and roasted pig belly with the crispy fat on top. It’s going to be nice and our family always embraces Christmas as something really special.

“Our family is very small, there’s only six of us, and now with William it’s seven and then Anne it’s eight, but Anne’s family is huge and they have Christmas lunches that are really a tradition in Denmark.”

And while the Celtic star is looking forward to celebrating Christmas in all his traditional ways, he is as eager to bring in the festive period as a father for the first time, and make it a memorable occasion for his son William.

“Nine months is still a time where he knows what’s going on around him and there’s joy in his face when he sees things like wrapping paper or a gift,” he said.

“He’s going to be happy and it’ll be interesting to host Christmas because it’s the first time Anna and I will be together as well because we always said the day we have a child is the day we start having Christmas together, so it’ll be nice, especially being in another country.”

Clubs are going to come a-knocking for this guy. Seems like he loves playing for us and being involved with the club though so we can definitely keep him

    I don't see him leaving.

25 now, if he is still here by 27/28 I imagine that will be him. Just strikes me as a guy who is content. I also don't think he is as appealing to English clubs as a Van Dijk. For obvious reasons.

Still a very good defender though so hopefully my hunch is right.

    Completely agree.

Think he'll be here for a long time.
