Has anyone on here been to this?
Me and my wife are heading up to celebrate my 50th (Yeh I know I don't look it) but are not sure whether to buy tickets for the street party and/or the concert or not. It looks good, but we were wondering if it might just be a better atmosphere on Carlton Hill or in the pubs in town.

    All (sensible) advice gratefully received

Was at it in 2012. Only arrived for the last hour got a bit carried away elsewhere but it was brilliant, took a load of chinese burds home :smiley-laughing002:

A lot will come down to whether you like the bands who are playing, we were in to it so found a similar crowd and the atmosphere was really good. Chaos when the bells went.

I'm in no position to give a decent account but from what I remember, and if it's not too expensive, i'd definitely recommend trying it out. Something different.

Have done the Edinburgh hogmany a couple of times. First time we got accomodation but its normally brutally expensive with inflated prices and a minimum 3 night stay - even in B&B. Personally I think the best bit is to get in really early and do a daytime crawl around so you are already inside the barriers. It gets a bit too packed later and pub crawling becomes no fun. Outside is OK but depends on the weather.

I grew up in Edinburgh so I went nearly every year from the age of about 15 to 21. It used to be brilliant when it was not ticketed, you could just go from one stage/area to another to see who you wanted.

It's all changed now thought, initially as a result of the mad crush that was in about 1999 I think, it was scary stuff. All of us were just carried along Rose Street with the crowd panicking.

I think I am right in saying that you now only get access in to a specific area, even on Princes Street. There are stages on the street and a couple in the gardens.

For accommodation I would go away from the city centre, LRT (local buses) usually put on late buses (by late I mean they run until about 5am) to get folk to the outlying towns. There's also the trams now but I don't know if they'll be running.

You'll get a cheap hotel in Tranent if you don't mind being stabbed.

Thanks for theadvice, we have already got the accomodation in the city centre which was pricey but cant be arsed with getting buses when too *, any anyway, yer only 50 once!
The only thing we are undecided about is whether to get the concert tickets or just get a few cansandgo upCarltonHill.

Worth it of you are in the Gardens.

Standing out freezing your balls with 75,000 strangers on Princes Street is pointless.
